  • 24 Hour Fitness, San Ramon, CA, has launched two programs to support U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. The programs, made available to National Governing Bodies (NGB) and their respective athletes, are called the Elite Membership and NGB Incentive programs, which are valued at more than $1 million. Elite Memberships are one-year, complimentary all-club passes to every 24 Hour club nationwide. As part of the NGB Incentive program, participating NGBs will receive a percentage from the sale of all memberships, personal training sessions and online transactions to help offset operating and program costs.
  • Crunch, New York, is expanding its franchise opportunities around the world. More than 50 Crunch franchise clubs are in development in the United States and internationally. The first franchise locations will open in Portland, OR, and Lake Forest, CA, this fall. Crunch is operated by New Evolution Ventures (NEV), formerly known as New Evolution Fitness Co. (NEFC).
  • A 4-year-old girl drowned on July 24 during a private event at the Orangeburg County Aquatic Center in Orangeburg, SC. Ariana Lily Robinson’s death was ruled accidental by the county coroner. The county-owned aquatics center is run by the Orangeburg YMCA. The $9 million water park opened over Memorial Day weekend.

  • Go Figure Inc., Houston, developers of the iGo Figure Member and Business Management Software, was recently nominated for the Best Place to Work in Houston award, which is sponsored by the Houston Chronicle. Each nominated company was required to have at least 70 percent of its staff based in the Houston area. Go Figure employees were surveyed extensively on the company’s organization, work environment and benefits package, along with accessibility to management, supervision and training. Results will be published in August by the Houston Chronicle.
  • The National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT) has obtained accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, according to the NCCPT. “We feel we’re the most practical entry-level and cost-effective certification available for people wanting to enter the field of personal training,” says John Platero, the director of education for the NCCPT.
