There were many highlights to last week’s Athletic Business
show in San Diego. Two of the biggest highlights involved Augie Nieto
and Mike Ditka.

The show floor at the Athletic Business conference in San
Diego was loaded with products related to sports surfaces, from court
surfaces to fields to field coverings.

So, after a few years in which some studies showed that being
a little overweight might be healthier than having a normal weight, a
new study shows that being overweight—and in particular, obese—can
increase the chances of dying earlier.

Life Time
Fitness, Chanhassen, MN, announced that it will open a new club in
April 2011 in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerlin, NV. This will be Life
Time’s first club in Nevada. The three-story, 144,000-square-foot
athletic club will have 24-hour access to group exercise, Pilates and
LifePower Yoga studios, a cycle theater, a mixed martial arts room and
more than 400 pieces of equipment. The club also will include indoor and
outdoor aquatics centers.
LA
Fitness, Irvine, CA, has opened a new club in the Chicago suburb of
Highland Park, IL, the company’s 20th club in the Chicago area. A
grand opening party is scheduled for Dec. 18.
24 Hour
Fitness, San Ramon, CA, has hired Allison Lewin as its vice
president of marketing. Lewin will oversee the company’s marketing
communications group, including advertising, brand strategy, customer
relationship management, field marketing, marketing services and online
marketing development. Lewin previously worked in category marketing for
Walmart.com in Brisbane, CA, and also has worked for Dreyer’s Grand
Ice Cream, Johnson & Johnson and Playtex Products.
Boston Sports Clubs, which is owned by Town Sports
International, New York, has provided personal training and coaching
for Brendan Donovan, a contestant on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” in
preparation for the show’s season finale airing next Tuesday. Donovan
has worked with Boston Sports Clubs master trainer Earl Strong since
Donovan left “The Biggest Loser” ranch in September.
Gold’s Gym is opening two
new clubs, one in downtown Milwaukee and one in Monterey, CA, according
to published reports. The club in Monterey, which was previously the
Garden Health and Fitness club, is part of a franchise that includes
gyms in four other California cities. The Milwaukee club is set to open
Thursday.
The Sparrow Michigan Athletic
Club, East Lansing, MI, the only mid-Michigan club affiliated with a
hospital, recently completed renovations and enhancements. The
renovations to the 276,000-square-foot club include the launch of free
Ask the Trainer sessions to increase access to trainers, upgrading
personal monitors on all cardio machines, the addition of more
treadmills and abdominal core machines, the remodeling of all four
locker rooms and new paint throughout the club.

The American Council
on Exercise (ACE) is collaborating with the International Council on Active Aging
(ICAA) to offer professional development for staff members who
provide fitness and wellness programs in senior living and
community-based senior centers throughout the United States. As an
extension of the existing partnership between ACE and the ICAA formed in
March 2009, the dedicated education tracks are designed to enhance the
knowledge and skills of rehabilitation, nursing, recreation and fitness
professionals who provide fitness and wellness programs to mature
adults.
ABC Financial Services,
Little Rock, AR, has joined the PCI Security Standards Council as a new
participating organization. ABC will work with the council to evolve the
PCI Data Security
Standard (DSS) and other payment card data protection standards. The
PCI DSS requires merchants and service providers that store, process
or transmit customer payment card data to adhere to information security
controls and processes that ensure data integrity.
Technogym,
Gambettola, Italy, has been chosen as the official fitness supplier for
the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and will provide
athlete training technology and equipment to all competitors in the
games. The company will also be the official supplier for the London
2012 Olympics, as it has been for the past four Olympics.
Netpulse,
San Francisco, is partnering with Virtual Active, San Francisco, to
bring its virtual reality running, cycling and hiking media experience
to Netpulse’s interactive media platform for consumers and fitness
centers. The Virtual Active program allows club members to virtually
run, cycle and hike in locations that include the Grand Canyon, the Las
Vegas Strip, and the Swiss and Italian Alps. Customers can choose to
exercise solo or work with an on-screen trainer. The new programming
will be available through Netpulse starting in 2011.
