The Gold’s Gym Franchisee Association, Sugar Hill, GA, has received the 2010 All Star Award from marketing firm Constant Contact Inc. The award is given to a small group of Constant Contact users who meet a list of criteria related to successful e-mail communication, including high open and click rates and low bounce rates.
Club Fitness, Rome, GA, has filed for bankruptcy and closed, according to the Rome (GA) News-Tribune. The club reportedly was still enrolling new members the day before it closed on March 23. The closing left about 40 employees out of a job, the newspaper reported. The company’s other locations in Carrollton, GA, and Jacksonville, AL, remain open.
509 Fitness, Kennewick, WA, has closed, according to local media reports. The club left an outgoing message on its answering machine saying the club closed due to a decline in memberships and a rise in expenses and competition. Several of the club’s employees learned about the closing through a Facebook post, according to a report.
Researchers in Michigan published a study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health that says owning a dog can lead to a healthier lifestyle. According to the report, individuals who walk their dogs on a regular basis have a 34 percent higher chance of reaching their physical activity targets. Less than half of the American population meets physical activity standards, but the study found that owning a dog encourages people to walk more, and people who own dogs become more active overall.

The Al Ahli Holding Group, based in the United Arab Emirates, signed equipment deals with Star Trac and Johnson Health Tech North America under its Matrix Fitness brand. Al Ahli CEO Mohammed Khammas met with executives from Star Trac and Matrix at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association show earlier this month in San Francisco. Last year, Al Ahli announced a master franchise agreement with Gold’s Gym International.
The Merrithew Health and Fitness Group, Toronto, has appointed Marina Glogovac to executive vice president of marketing and sales. Glogovac brings 20 years of experience in sales, brand marketing and strategy development. President Lindsay G. Merrithew says, “We look forward to taking the company to the next level with Marina helping lead the charge in terms of business growth, productivity and effectiveness to reach new international markets worldwide.”
The 10th Annual National Drowning Prevention Symposium will take place April 14-15 in Colorado Springs, CO. “Symposium attendees exchange best practices, engage in international networking and participate in hands-on activities,” says Sue Nelson, event chairperson. Drowning is the second-highest cause of childhood deaths in the nation, and the symposium provides educational programs to promote child safety.
