Gold's Gym International, (GGI) Irving, TX, has converted a franchised gym in Colorado Springs, CO, into a corporate-owned gym. GGI had recently taken over operations at the Briargate location when a dispute between the franchisee and the landlord of the shopping center temporarily closed the gym. "We were happy to step in so that members could continue their workouts and will immediately begin re-staffing the gym and making sure it delivers the ultimate fitness experience," GGI President Jim Snow said. GGI will be hiring managers, salespeople, group exercise instructors, personal trainers and other positions from the Colorado Springs community.
Two contract pool maintenance workers were hospitalized Monday after a chemical mishap at an LA Fitness in Hopkins, MN, according to numerous media reports. One of the workers remained in critical condition on Monday night. Police said that the pool chemicals were mixed incorrectly, releasing a vapor cloud inside the club. No LA Fitness members or employees were harmed. LA Fitness, Irvine, CA, has not responded to a request seeking comment.
A fire early Monday morning caused an estimated $11,000 in damage at NuLife Fitness in Williamston, NC, according to local media reports. The fire was caused by a malfunctioning claw crane arcade game inside NuLife, which also operates NuLife 4 Kids. The fire triggered the building's sprinkler system, causing extensive water damage at the club.
Gainesville Health and Fitness, Gainesville, FL, was temporarily evacuated last Thursday when a faulty smoke detector set off the building's fire alarm. Brian Russell, communications specialist for Gainesville Health and Fitness, says a sensor was malfunctioning. The company that the club contracts with is replacing the sensor, Russell adds.
Two executives at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Salem, OR, have announced that they will retire on Dec. 1, according to local media outlets. Donna Ames, the center's executive director, and her husband, Jerry Ames, county coordinator for the Kroc Center, were eligible to retire from the Salvation Army several years ago but agreed to stay on in order to see the Salem Kroc through its opening in September 2009. A Salvation Army Western Territory spokesperson said the organization hoped to announce the successors by mid-December.
The Delaware (OH) Community Center YMCA opened its doors on Tuesday. The center, which will hold a grand opening ceremony on Dec. 17, was built and is owned by the city of Delaware, OH, but is operated by the YMCA of Central Ohio as part of a public-private partnership. In August, the city awarded a contract for managing all of its recreation facilities and programming to the YMCA.

Hoist Fitness Systems held a groundbreaking for its 130,000-square-foot facility on Nov. 11. The custom-built facility, which is on 6.8 acres in San Diego County, CA, allows Hoist's teams to collaborate under one roof on products, such as its ROC-IT line.
ABC Financial, Little Rock, AR, has hired Craig Fine as regional sales director. Fine had served as vice president of business development at Conexion, which was founded and operated by his father, Benson Fine, for more than 10 years. Fine most recently was director of channel sales for Motionsoft.
AV Now Fitness Sound recently released its Fitness Audio MT-U8 cableless microphone system. The Fitness Audio MT-U8 compact transmitter has been miniaturized and attached to the Aeromic, Cyclemic, or E-mic headset frames. The system has specially designed O-ring seals, marine-grade varnish on the circuit board and a sealed, single push-button power switch. It also has an eight-channel frequency-agile transmitter and receiver combination.
