First Prescription Diet Pill
Approved for OTC Use
ROCKVILLE, MD -- Skip the trip to the doctor. Your overweight
members have an easier way to obtain the diet pill, orlistat. On
Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved orlistat
capsules as an over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss aid for overweight
adults. Orlistat was initially approved in 1999 as a prescription drug
to treat obesity and remains a prescription drug for obesity at a higher
dose than the OTC version. OTC orlistat will be manufactured by
GlaxoSmithKline under the name Alli and is indicated for use in adults
ages 18 years and older along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and

Fitness Together Opened 26 Studios
Last Quarter
HIGHLANDS RANCH, CO -- Fitness Together, a personal training
organization, opened 26 studios in the last quarter of 2006, a 16
percent increase over the same period the previous year, says Rick
Sikorski, Fitness Together CEO. In all, 91 studios were opened in 2006.

Bally Opens New Club in Alexandria,
VA
ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Bally Total Fitness has expanded in the
Washington, DC, area with the early February opening of a new club in
Alexandria, VA. Bally has four other clubs in northern Virginia, six in
suburban Maryland and one in DC.
To celebrate the grand opening, Bally sponsored a three-day celebration
featuring group exercise class demonstrations, a guest appearance by the
NBA Washington Wizards' dance team, a raffle for Wizards' tickets and
new-member specials.

JCC Plans Expansion
TENAFLY, NJ -- A $26 million, two-year expansion of the Jewish
Community Center (JCC) on the Palisades in Tenafly, NJ, will add 22,000
square feet to the center, which has more than 10,000 members. As part
of the project, the racquetball courts will be converted to multipurpose
rooms for personal training and group exercise. The JCC will also
improve its youth and senior lounges, its youth fitness facilities, and
its fitness and recreation areas.
Gold's Gym
International Opens its 42nd Fitness Facility in Texas
SAN ANTONIO -- Hundreds of local residents took part in the grand
opening of Gold's Gym Bandera Trails in San Antonio, and, as a result,
the facility sold 174 memberships. The 40,000-square-foot facility
marked the opening of the 42nd Gold's Gym facility in Texas.
Gold's Gym Bandera Trails offers group exercise classes, a cycling room,
90 pieces of cardio equipment with personalized TV viewing screens, a
13,000-square-foot weight room and plasma screen TVs throughout the gym.
One of the most unique features of the new facility is the Cardio Cinema
room, in which members can work out while watching their favorite film
on the big screen.

Elliptical, Stationary Bike Are New
PRT Cardio Options

to run. The Navy's fitness program introduced the option of using
elliptical trainers or stationary bikes as ways for sailors to complete
the cardiovascular portion of the physical readiness test (PRT). The
elliptical and cycle tests are both 12-minute, fixed-timed tests with a
direct correlation to the 1.5-mile run. The goal is to burn as many
