Minimum Wage Increase and
Higher Energy Costs Affect Erie Y
ERIE, PA -- The new Pennsylvania minimum wage and higher energy
costs are affecting the YMCA of Greater Erie (PA). In fact, starting
this fall, the Y will no longer offer free swimming lessons to its
members due to the increased expenses, Erie, PA, TV station WHP-TV
reported. On July 1, Pennsylvania's minimum wage rose from $6.25 per

Player Opens Club in Indiana
CEDAR LAKE, IN -- Jared Tomich, who played five seasons in the
National Football League, has opened a 16,000-square-foot club in Cedar
Lake, IN, according to the Northwest Times of Indiana.
Fuel Fitness Center has 16 staff members and a dozen instructors and
personal trainers. The club offers the latest equipment, a full aerobic
room for yoga and Pilates classes, cardio kickboxing, full locker rooms
and childcare, Tomich told the newspaper. Tomich played four seasons
with the New Orleans Saints.
Kansas Club
To Expand By Nearly Nine Times Its Size
EMPORIA, KS -- City commissioners in Emporia, KS, on Wednesday
approved the move of Emporia Fitness from a 2,400-square-foot area to a
former Pepsi Bottling Group building that has 21,000 square feet,
according to The Emporia Gazette.
The new location will include virtual cycling and a new audio system in
its cardio theater as well as enhanced weightlifting equipment, the
newspaper reported. Locker rooms and showers will be installed, and a
smoothie bar will be added. A lounge area and childcare also will be
provided.

Nautilus CEO Steps
Down
VANCOUVER, WA -- A month after Nautilus Inc. released its financial
report showing falling net sales for second quarter 2007, Gregg Hammann
stepped down as president and chief executive officer of the Vancouver,
WA-based equipment manufacturer. He also resigned his seat on the
company's board. Robert S. Falcone, Nautilus's lead independent
director, will serve as chairman, president and chief executive officer

In Brief...
XSport Fitness is adding two locations, one in Hicksville, NY,
and the other in the West Loop area of Chicago. The $10 million,
45,000-square-foot mega fitness centers will include 150 pieces of
cardio equipment with personal flat screen televisions, more than 300
strength-training machines, free weight areas, two group exercise rooms,
a four-lane pool, whirlpool, rock climbing walls, basketball courts, and
sauna and steam rooms. The facilities will also include complete day
spas, featuring full hair, nail and massage treatments; personal
training and fitness assessments; 20 tanning rooms; and a fully
equipped child play center.
Fitness Together Franchise Corp., which recently sold its 500th
personal training franchise, has named Kevin Betts as its president,
according to Rick Sikorski, CEO and founder of Fitness Together. Betts
has served as vice president of operations since 1999, working alongside
Sikorski for 14 years. Betts began working with Fitness Together in 1993
as a personal trainer while a student at Arizona State University. He
was promoted to general manager of the company's largest fitness studio
in 1996 and then became vice president of operations for Fitness
Together in 1999.
ECA World Fitness announced that ECA Thrive! 2007, formerly known as
ECA/MIAMI Sports Training and Fitness Conference, has moved up the coast
from Miami and will be held Oct. 4-7 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, at the
Harbor Beach Resort and Spa. The convention's new name represents a
broader interpretation focusing more on wellness programs with an
emphasis on a person's spiritual, emotional and mental health, as well
as the physical, according to ECA.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) signed a new
agreement with the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association
(NBATA) that establishes NASM as the official provider of sports
education for the organization. NASM will develop and market
instructional programs in consultation with the NBATA while serving as a
resource to each NBA team's medical staff.
