Keynotes Draw Crowds at
Club Industry 2007
CHICAGO -- More than 500 attendees filled the room on Oct. 11 for
the presentation of Club Industry's Fitness Business Pro's
Lifetime Achievement Award to Alan G. Schwartz, chairman of the board of
TCA Holdings, and the keynote address given by Laila Ali, world boxing
champion and daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
The show also featured numerous seminars, early-morning workouts and
more than 800 booths on the trade show floor, according to Zari Stahl,
Club Industry 2007 show director. More than 8,700 attendees registered
for the four-day event in Chicago. For more on the show, check out our

The Alaska Club Sold to
Private Equity Firm
NEW YORK -- Lincolnshire Management Inc., a New York-based private
equity firm, has purchased The Alaska Club, which has 17 fitness centers
in the state of Alaska. Read the full story.
Bally
Installing Surveillance Equipment in NJ Club
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -- Bally Total Fitness is installing video
surveillance equipment inside and outside its facility in East
Brunswick, NJ, in response to thefts at the club, according to a report
in the East Brunswick Home News Tribune.
Local police reported there were at least 50 thefts at the Bally club
last year and 32 thefts so far this year, according to the newspaper.
Bally spokesperson Matt Messinger told the newspaper that installing the
surveillance equipment was something Bally deemed necessary. He added
that signs in the club and member contracts state that Bally is not
responsible for theft of valuables.
Locker Thief at
YWCA Uses Borrowed Hammer
WHITE PLAINS, NY -- A 34-year-old man allegedly borrowed a hammer
from a lifeguard at the YWCA of White Plains, NY, and used it to break
into three of the YW's lockers last month, taking cash and personal
items, according to The Journal News (NY).
The Greenburgh, NY, man allegedly returned the hammer before leaving,
the paper reported. Desmond Anderson is also accused of breaking into
two lockers at the White Plains Family YMCA. Anderson was arrested and
charged with five counts of petty larceny, the newspaper reported.

percentage of people who belong to a health club, according to the 2007
Health Club Industry Review produced by The Active Marketing Group. Read

Peak Fitness closed its club in the Westgate Shopping Center in
West Asheville, NC, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.
Several companies had run the club in the shopping center over the last
25 years. Peak Fitness, which bought the club in August 2006, claims its
rent would have quadrupled to $28,000 a month. The company that owns the
property, FIRC Group LLC, claims that the rent would have at least
doubled, to about $13,500 a month, according to the newspaper.
Ocean Fitness Center in Ocean Township, NJ, has closed after 20
years in operation. The club's owner, The Fitness Co., filed for
bankruptcy in July. The Fitness Co. reported $3.4 million in assets and
$8.1 million in liabilities, according to court papers.

Matrix Fitness
Systems' third-quarter sales increased nationally by 98 percent. The
company credits the increase to the newly incorporated Ascent Trainer,
Incline Elliptical and the Hybrid cycle.
Toronto's Granite Club has installed Taraflex Sports Flooring in
its 6,500-square-foot facility. Multi-Use 3.0 was installed in the
two-story club. The flooring is 3 millimeters thick and is designed to
decrease noise level, be a good shock absorber and reduce friction
burns. It is made of 43 percent recycled material and can be recycled
when it wears out.
BV Entertainment and
SuperPlasma have teamed up to meet the growing demand to upgrade fitness
facilities' TVs to the new HD digital broadcasting format. BV
Entertainment will market its AXS Series wireless system with the
large-screen HD digital TVs from SuperPlasma. The AXS Series allows
exercisers to connect their headsets to cardio equipment-mounted
receivers so they can hear any TV in the room. The wireless series is
compatible with BroadcastVision, Cardio Theater, MYE Entertainment and
CardioVision transmitters.
Star Trac launched its Expect
Different campaign to help tackle the growing epidemic of obesity and
diabetes in the United States.
Specialty News named Octane Fitness the best
supplier in the club industry for 2007. Octane Fitness also had the
top-selling elliptical for the third consecutive year.
