employees participated in a joint weight-loss challenge from Aug. 10 to

and Naval Network Warfare Command (NEWARCOM). The commands went beyond

The National Swimming Pool Foundation awarded two grants
totaling $210,354 to continue the research about reducing injury and
disease in and around water. A grant of an additional $19,746 will help
research health benefits of immersion and exercise in water. Purdue
University and New York Medical College received the injury prevention
grants, and the University of Idaho received the health benefits grant.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the United Way of Allegheny County
teamed with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania and Strive to create a Steelers Fitness
Zone at the Boys & Girls Club in Millvale, PA. The Steelers Fitness
Zone, a black and gold workout room, is packed with youth-oriented
fitness equipment provided by Strive. The joint effort last month was
part of the ninth annual NFL/United Way Hometown Huddle, a series of
volunteer projects implemented near different NFL cities nationwide.
Matrix Fitness Systems'
U.S. third-quarter sales increased by 98 percent over the corresponding
2006 period, the company announced. Over the same time frame last year,
global sales grew 55 percent. Chris Clawson, president of Matrix,
attributes the growth to the company's new products, including the
Ascent Trainer, Incline Elliptical and the Hybrid Cycle.
Lady of America announced it will partner with Power Plate North America to
integrate Power Plate pro5 Acceleration Training machines into its
clubs. The Power Plate Acceleration Training products use advanced
vibration technology to fuel a person's natural and reactive response to
vibration. The technology allows for users to get their workouts
completed in half the time of a recommended 30-minute routine.
Expresso Fitness
became the newest Gold's Gym national vendor member in September. By
becoming a vendor member, Expresso Fitness is aligned with franchised
and corporate facilities. As an immediate result of the partnership,
Expresso bikes have been added to 10 states.
The International Fitness
Professionals Association (IFPA) Personal Fitness Trainer
Certification examination has received National Organization of
Competency Assurance/National Commission for Competency Assurance
accreditation, according to the Tampa, FL-based group. IFPA has also
earned the International Association for Continuing Education and
Training authorized provider credential.
