Removed from Maryland Tax Bill
ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The Maryland Senate Budget and Taxation Committee
voted Tuesday to remove health clubs from a list of services to which a

MINNEAPOLIS -- Revenue for the third quarter increased 5 percent at
Health Fitness Corp., the provider of integrated employee health

New Gold's Gym Planned in
Virginia
ROANOKE, VA -- A new Gold's Gym will open in March at a mall in
Roanoke, VA, according to The Roanoke Times. The Gold's Gym will
take the place of New Fitness, which closed last year in bankruptcy. The
five investors of the new Gold's told the newspaper they are investing
between $4 million and $5 million in renovations and equipment.
The new Gold's Gym franchise will compete with the current Gold's, which
opened four years ago in Southwest Roanoke County, and will not share
members, according to the newspaper. The new Gold's also will compete
with other fitness centers in the area, including a planned $30 million
recreation center in North Roanoke County that will serve both children
and adults, according to the report.
New LA Fitness Opens in Washington State
EVERETT, WA -- LA Fitness opened a new club in the Everett (WA)
Mall, The Everett Herald reported. The 49,000-square-foot club is
the largest LA Fitness in the Northwest, general manager Clint Richard
told the newspaper.
The new club includes a full-sized basketball court, racquetball courts,
a four-lane lap pool, a spa, and large areas of circuit-training
machines, cardio equipment and free weights. The club also includes 10
mounted plasma TVs, two classrooms for exercise sessions and on-site
child care.

CLEVELAND, TN -- Earlier this week, the YMCA of Metropolitan
Chattanooga's Cleveland (TN) branch fired three employees who were

Athletic Club Purchases Women-Only Club
BELLINGHAM, WA -- The Bellingham (WA) Athletic Club (BAC) has
purchased the Express Fitness and Tan women-only club, The Bellingham
Herald reported. BAC owner Cathy Buckley told the newspaper she
plans to change the name of the club to Bellingham Athletic Club
Express.
Express Fitness provided a 30-minute workout for its members. Buckley
told the newspaper that she will listen to the club's members before
making changes to the workout programs, which might include adding more
cardio equipment for the 30-minute workout.

Augie Nieto
Releases Book
NEW YORK -- Augie Nieto, founder of Life Fitness, released his book
"Augie's Quest: One Man's Journey from Success to Significance" on
Wednesday, making an emotional appearance on "The Today Show" with his
wife, Lynne. Nieto was diagnosed with ALS, more commonly known as Lou
Gehrig's disease, in 2005. After attempting suicide soon after the
diagnosis, he has focused his life on raising funds to cure the disease.
Proceeds from the book, which goes on sale Nov. 13, will go to find a

Health Declines
WASHINGTON, DC -- The overall health of the nation declined over the
past year despite progress made in some key health indicators, according
to a report released this week by the United Health Foundation, the
American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention. The
report indicates that the overall health of the nation declined by a

SAN DIEGO -- Functional fitness programming works for older adults,
and most of them see real-world benefits relatively quickly, according
to a study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Tustin (CA) Public Schools Foundation's 17th Annual Dinosaur Dash Run on

for the 10K runners. The run raised money to finance special learning
programs in Tustin, CA, public schools and benefited the private,
not-for-profit Tustin Public Schools Foundation.
