SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- Students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (CA),
recently voted to approve a fee increase to pay for a $72 million
renovation and expansion of the campus recreation center, according to
the San Luis Obispo Tribune.
The fee increase of $65 per student per quarter will be implemented when
the project has been completed, which is expected to be in the fall of
2011 at the earliest. The project would increase the facility from
65,000 square feet to 130,000 square feet. The plan includes an
additional 14,000 square feet for the weight and exercise room, two new
courts for basketball and volleyball, a multi-activity center for sports
and entertainment, and a leisure pool to complement the existing lap
pool, the newspaper reported.

Rec Center Receives New Equipment
MINNEAPOLIS -- In honor of its 15th anniversary, the University
Recreation Center at the University of Minnesota is getting a face-lift.
New free weights and lifting equipment were recently installed at the
center for the first time since the building opened in 1993, according
to The Minnesota Daily.
Treadmills and elliptical machines are replaced every three to five
years at the center, and routine maintenance on equipment is done at
least once a year, director Jim Turman tells the student newspaper.
Turman adds that the installation of new equipment, which will cost more
than $500,000, has been planned for several years.

Study Finds that Personal
Contact Best for Keeping Weight Off
BATON ROUGE, LA -- Recent research confirms what many in the
industry already know: members need accountability in order to lose
weight and keep it off. In fact, people who were enrolled in a
weight-loss maintenance trial and had a brief, monthly personal contact
intervention—most often a 10- to 15-minute personal phone
conversation—regained less weight than participants who were in a
Web-based intervention or self-directed program. Read the full story.
