Snap Fitness
Announces Minority Equity Investment
CHANHASSEN, MN -- Last month, amid rumors that Snap Fitness was for
sale, CEO and founder Peter Taunton said he had no desire to sell a
majority share of the company. But Taunton did not rule out finding a
minority partner. On June 3, the company announced a minority equity
investment from Summit Partners. Terms of the transaction were not

Florida Toughens Up
P.E. Standards
TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Florida Gov. Charlie Crist signed a bill on June
2 expanding physical education at the elementary and middle school
levels. Senate Bill 610, also known as the “Don Davis Physical
Education Act,” requires middle schools to offer students in grades
six through eight one class period of physical education per day for one

More than $2 Million
Awarded to Study Health Games
PRINCETON, NJ -- More than $2 million in grants was awarded to 12
research teams in California, Florida, Indiana, Maine, North Carolina,
New York, South Carolina, Vermont and Washington to study how and if
digital interactive games improve players’ health behaviors and
outcomes.
This is the first round of grants to be awarded from the foundation
through its Health Games Research national program, based at the
University of California, Santa Barbara. The $8.25 million program
studies everything from traditional video games on game consoles,
hand-held game players, arcade machines, computers, Web sites and
multi-player online worlds, to new kinds of games, such as mobile
interactive television, virtual environments, electronic toys or other
emerging technologies that are becoming more affordable and accessible.

The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association
joined the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD), releasing a new
resource for policymakers and health experts. The publication,
“Keeping America Healthy: A Guide To Successful Programs,” was
compiled by the PFCD, with support from its members, and showcases
public and private programs from across the country that have been
successful in promoting healthy behaviors and reducing the burden of
disease.
Life Time Fitness formally announced last week its plans to open a
110,000-square-foot club in Florham Park, NJ, the company’s first in
the New York tri-state area. Florham Park Life Time Athletic, scheduled
to open during the fourth quarter of 2008, will include a full-service
day spa, a chef-driven café, and indoor and outdoor aquatics
centers.
Town Sports International recently announced the opening of two
clubs, a New York Sports Club in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and a Washington
Sports Club in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington,
DC.
24 Hour Fitness announced 21 of its fitness managers and master
trainers will serve as fitness ambassadors and staff the United States
Olympic Committee’s High Performance Training Center in Beijing for
the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Cypress Bend Real Estate Development recently announced the
development of Stone Creek Club & Spa, a 52,000-square-foot upscale
health club in Covington, LA. The facility was built to serve the
suburbs north of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain, LA. The club will
feature a 4,700-square-foot full-service spa, 12 tennis courts with
viewing facilities, salt-water pools, child care, a café, locker rooms,
and fitness and group exercise areas. Membership pre-sales will begin in
September. The club is scheduled to open in May 2009.
The board of directors of the National Swimming Pool Foundation
voted to allocate $812,500 in research grants for the year 2008-2009.
This year's amount matches the amount budgeted the previous year and
represents a 134 percent increase since 2004. This budget includes the
first $200,000 installment of a $1 million grant to Washington State
University in Pullman, WA, to help establish the National Aquatics and
Sports Medicine Institute.
