age, according to recently performed tests on 2.6 million Texas

College Gets the
LEED Gold
ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Washtenaw Community College Health & Fitness
Center in Ann Arbor, MI, has received gold certification from the U.S.
Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Program. The Health & Fitness Center, designed by Denver-based
Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative (OLC), opened in September with a long list
of environmentally friendly features that had led the OLC team to
anticipate the LEED gold distinction. The U.S. Green Building Council
has awarded gold certification to 461 buildings since the program began
in 2000.

Marines Celebrate
Fourth of July with Iraq Run
FALLUJAH, IRAQ -- Marines and sailors with Headquarters and Service
Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group,
celebrated Independence Day by competing in a five-mile run in Fallujah,
Iraq. The 14 service members started the run early in the morning to
beat the day’s quickly rising heat. After the event, the participants
cooled down and stretched, then received a certificate of completion.
Staying mentally and physically fit while on deployment is important for
the well-being of the Marines and sailors as well as the overall
effectiveness of the unit, says David P. Leach, company first sergeant.
“I would have loved to have been back home enjoying fireworks with my
family,” says Petty Officer 2nd Class Delfino Vega. “But we’re
here doing our part to help rebuild Iraq, and I’m happy to be doing
that.”

The Thoreau Club/Camp Thoreau Inc., a third-generation
family-owned business based in Concord, MA, won the 2008 Marshall
Paisner Massachusetts Family Business of the Year Award. The Thoreau
Club was one of three Massachusetts-based companies recognized for its
achievements in the community and business success. The award is
presented to companies that exhibit positive business practices and have
significantly contributed to their communities. Camp Thoreau Inc. was
established in 1951 by Click and Dot Pulis. Click and Dot’s son, Todd,
introduced tennis and swimming into the business, which now also has a
spa and fitness center with Pilates, exercise classes and programs for

The Harlem Globetrotters launched their S.P.I.N. (Some Playtime Is
Necessary) initiative as thousands of kids and adults at YMCAs and
backyards across the United States simultaneously dribbled basketballs
at 1 p.m. EDT on June 30. Globetrotter players led the S.P.I.N. events
at Ys in New York, Chicago, Phoenix and Houston. S.P.I.N. is a program
designed to make fitness fun and to help kids cultivate an active
lifestyle.

Some fitness equipment manufacturers across the country are
being hit hard by the slowing economy and rising energy and material
costs. To reduce costs, some companies are laying off workers and
restructuring. Others report they are doing business as usual. Read the

Town Sports International (TSI) announced that it has expanded its
partnership with Healthways Inc., offering the Healthways SilverSneakers fitness program
for active older adults at 15 more of TSI's New York Sports Clubs (NYSC)
locations. Currently, there are 16 NYSC locations and six Philadelphia
Sports Clubs locations that have the SilverSneakers program, bringing
the total number of TSI clubs offering SilverSneakers to 37.
Ron Poliseno, director of client development for CheckFree Health and Fitness, will
give a presentation at the upcoming FitLife conference, Aug. 3-5 in
Bend, OR. The session, “Information is Key to Profitability,” will
provide insight into how information can be analyzed and extracted to
compare club performance to a database of more than 2,500 health and
fitness clubs.
About 200 people attended the recent Les Mills Quarterly Workshop at
Starport Fitness at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The
two-day workshop offered education for club owners on how group fitness
can improve member retention and profitability, plus training and
education for instructors in the Les Mills group fitness formulas.
Starport Fitness is open to all NASA employees, contractors and their
families, and recently introduced the BodyPump group fitness program
from Les Mills International.
This month, Island Oasis
kicked off a yearlong Flavor-of-the-Month beverage program. Among the
new concoctions to be offered are Mango Paradise for July, Peach-A-Boo
for October, the North Pole for December and Shamrock Shimmy for March.
The Flavor-of-the-Month program was developed to promote product
versatility across the company's three product lines: frozen drinks,
smoothies and Power Blendz, which is an all-natural product with
pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements, vitamins and protein
powders targeted to the health and fitness industry.
