Planet
Fitness Puts World Gym Up for Sale
DOVER, NH -- It appears the World has become too much to handle for
one Planet. Planet Fitness, which two years ago bought World Gym for
around $10 million, is putting World Gym up for sale, Planet Fitness CEO
Mike Grondahl confirmed last week.

Urban Active Hires
New Senior Vice President
LEXINGTON, KY -- Mike Maynard has become the latest executive to
leave 24 Hour Fitness. Maynard, who recently served as a 24 Hour
regional vice president, was hired by Global Fitness Holdings, which
owns and operates 28 Urban Active Health and Fitness Clubs in Kentucky,
Ohio and Tennessee, as its new senior vice president of sales for its
southern division.
Bill Robinson, senior vice president of sales, will manage the northern
division of the company. Both Maynard and Robinson will report to new
Global Fitness Holdings Chief Operating Officer Martin Stein. Maynard
has also held key roles with Gold’s Gym, World Gym and Jim Bottin’s
Fitness.
Global Fitness Holdings also promoted KT Remus to senior marketing
director. Remus will be responsible for Urban Active’s marketing
strategy, brand management, advertising and promotional campaigns.

Kellogg's 'Play' Grants
CHICAGO -- The YMCA of the USA recently partnered with Kellogg’s
Corporate Citizenship Fund to award $10,000 grants to Ys located within
25 miles of a Kellogg company manufacturing location. As a result, a
total of 24 Ys were awarded funds to provide underserved youth with
physical activity opportunities.
The Kellogg’s Opportunity to Play grants will be used in Ys for a
variety of programming: physical education classes in schools where
there has been none, the development of basketball and swim leagues with
and for Sudanese immigrants, a camp program for kids infected with or
affected by HIV, extended after-school programming that emphasizes
active play and nutrition education, a new playground for toddlers in
subsidized child care, supervised recreational activities in housing
complexes and schools, and an adult-child fitness and nutrition
program.

Fitness May Slow Brain Atrophy in People With Alzheimer's
KANSAS CITY, KS -- A new study shows that exercise may help slow
brain shrinkage in people with early Alzheimer’s disease. In the
study, people with early Alzheimer’s who were less physically fit had
four times more brain shrinkage than normal older adults. Read the full

24 Hour Fitness has become an official partner of the USA
Basketball men’s and women’s senior national teams. 24 Hour will
have the ability to promote its brand through USA Basketball games,
media and special events.
Canada’s Simon Whitfield and Australia’s Emma Snowsill won the
men’s and women’s professional divisions at the Life Time Fitness
Triathlon on July 12 in Minneapolis. Each took home a first-place prize
of $60,000.
Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, Greenwood Village, CO, is
expanding its weight room by an additional 2,400 square feet on the
first floor and is increasing its business office by an additional 2,400
square feet on the second floor. The two-story expansion project broke
ground in May and is expected to be completed in November. The club also
is remodeling 7,200 square feet of the existing weight room and
stretching area and approximately 2,000 square feet of the business and
membership office.
Nicki Anderson was named the IDEA Health & Fitness Association
Personal Trainer of the Year. The award recognizes an IDEA member who is
a practicing professional in the fitness industry and spends 15 or more
hours per week actively training clients one-on-one. IDEA also seeks a
candidate who displays exceptional leadership, business management,
motivational and instructional abilities, and who has inspired his or
her clients toward greater personal growth and a higher fitness level.
Currently the owner of Reality Fitness, a private personal training
studio in Naperville, IL, Anderson has been a certified personal trainer
for 17 years, has written two books on fitness-related topics and has
authored numerous articles for industry magazines.
The Aquatic Exercise Association, USA Swimming and the National
Swimming Pool Foundation invite trainers and fitness professionals to
attend a symposium to learn how clients can become stronger by
incorporating an aquatic component into their training regimen. The
special forum will feature national Olympic team coaches and an
international group of speakers and attendees on Oct. 15 at the U.S.
Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The pre-conference
event is in conjunction with the fifth annual World Aquatic Health
Conference, Oct. 15-17. Trainers can register online here.

Jacobs Ladder was
recently featured on KABC-TV in Los Angeles for the equipment’s role

(AFS) of Chicago. Gerflor,
headquartered in Lyon, France, and AFS have been longtime partners. AFS
has been the authorized Gerflor and Taraflex distributor and installer
in the Midwest and on the West Coast for many years.
Power Systems Inc.
founders and owners Bruno and Julie Pauletto presented a check for
$20,022.35 to Special Olympics Tennessee on July 1 at the company’s
new headquarters in Knoxville, TN. Power Systems raised the money for
the donation during its Charity Warehouse Sale, which allows local
fitness and sports performance professionals and enthusiasts the
opportunity to purchase training equipment and other merchandise at
discounted prices, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics. Power
Systems held its first Charity Warehouse Sale in 2005, and due to its
success, the sale became a regular event. This year’s record sales
quadrupled the amount raised during the previous sale.
Star Trac debuted its new line
of consumer fitness equipment, branded under the moniker ST Fitness, at
the Health and Fitness Business Show that was held July 17-18 at the
Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Star Trac began its expansion into
the consumer market in 2007 with the introduction of the S Series line
of ultra premium consumer and light commercial cardio products. The ST
Fitness products feature a contemporary look.
