In Brief...
Burlington, VT, was named the healthiest city in America in a
recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Burlington has the largest proportion of people—92 percent—who say
they are in good or great health. Burlington also is among the best
cities in terms of exercise and low obesity rates. Huntington, WV, was
named the unhealthiest city in America.
Steve Ehasz, fitness director of the Maryland Athletic Club and
Wellness Center at Harbor East, has been named the Maryland State
Captain by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA). As State Captain,
Ehasz will act as the state ambassador and encourage participation in
the MFA and the medical fitness industry. The term of State Captain is
for one year, although Ehasz may serve up to three years.
Inside
Manufacturers
Star Trac recently
launched its newest Spinning bike, the eSpinner, which extends the
Spinning experience onto the cardio room floor. The eSpinner allows
users to take a guided, virtual Spinning class from a master instructor
through an embedded 15-inch touch screen display.
Spinning recently introduced
the new iSpinning cardio and cycling application available for Apple’s
iPhone and iPod that compiles real-time data for fitness tracking.
iSpinning is compatible with leading fitness heart rate transmitters and
other fitness sensors. In addition to heart-related data, iSpinning
receives speed, cadence and power data from cycling sensors so users can
track cycling metrics from their road and mountain bikes.
At last month’s Club Industry show, many attendees participated in
the Octane Challenge by test-riding the new Octane Fitness xRide seated
elliptical and the Pro3700 standing elliptical. Upon providing feedback,
attendees were entered into a random drawing for the Ultimate Cardio Gym
giveaway. Representatives from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN,
won three Octane xR6000 seated ellipticals and three Pro3700 models.
Some of the ellipticals will be placed in their dormitory—which is a
fitness and wellness-themed residence hall—while the remainder of the
ellipticals will be placed in the university’s recreation
center.
In September, ASF
International, Denver, CO, started a mandatory recycling program
that eliminated more than 2.62 tons of waste in the month of September
alone. According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Gaylord Corp., the amount
recycled equates to saving 35 mature trees, 1,849 gallons of oil, 90
gallons of gasoline and 2,796 gallons of water.
Certain types of waste are not recyclable, but the company’s goal is
to decrease that waste and use more sustainable materials or items that
can be recycled, says Rachelle Shotwell, ASF’s marketing
manager.
Absolo LLC is partnering with
Incredible Discoveries, a DRTV and multi-channel marketing company, to
produce a long-form infomercial about its Absolo equipment. The Absolo
product has been in fitness facilities for years, but the infomercial
introduces the product to the retail market.
