In Brief...
An automated external defibrillator (AED) helped save the life
of a 37-year-old man who had collapsed while jogging on a treadmill,
according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette. After Mike Uttech
collapsed at Western Racquet & Fitness Club in Ashwaubenon, WI, club
members, including a respiratory therapist, gave him CPR before reviving
him with the AED. After about eight minutes of aid from members and
staff, emergency medical personnel arrived and took over, according to
the newspaper. Doctors later told Uttech that he would not have survived
without the club’s AED.
A former club owner in Salinas, CA, pleaded no contest to felony
grand theft from a customer. Terry Fasy, former owner of Terry’s
Fitness, was accused of seven felony counts of grand theft and
embezzlement in connection with the gym and its holding company, Blanc
Commercial Inc., according to the Monterey County (CA) Herald.
Fasy also was accused of extending one-year memberships without
customers’ knowledge, then sending them to a collections agency when
the bills were unpaid, according to the newspaper. Fasy likely will
avoid jail time if he pays up to $170,000 in restitution to his victims
by May 5, his sentencing date.
Several Dallas-area fitness clubs, including LA Fitness, 24 Hour
Fitness and Life Time Fitness, have been the target of thefts, according
to Dallas TV station NBC5. Police say the three thieves—two men and
one woman—have racked up thousands of dollars on credit cards stolen
from vehicles parked at the fitness centers. The thieves have used the
credit cards at local Targets and Wal-Marts to buy high-end electronics,
police say.
A hotel fire last month in Plattsburgh, NY, displaced nearly 200
