AFAA Launches
Bone Health Initiative
LOS ANGELES -- The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America
(AFAA) is working with Swezey Institute of Santa Monica (CA), a bone
health institution, to provide a new way to improve bone and joint
health, according to the fitness certification association. As part of
the initiative, AFAA will reach out to select locations, including clubs
and health institutions, to promote bone and joint health.
In collaboration with the Swezey Institute, AFAA created a custom
home-exercise DVD to complement the OsteoBall -- an inflatable vinyl
ball for easy-to-do tension and resistance (isometric) exercises. An
eight-week Swezey Institute study using the OsteoBall showed that users
had an increase in muscle strength in their head, neck, hands, elbow
flexors, quads, elbow extensors and trunk. The findings were published
in the Journal of Rheumatology.

In Brief...
The Paul family, partners in Urban Active, Lexington, KY, as
well as other businesses, are now also partners in the Pittsburgh
Steelers. In December, the NFL approved an ownership restructuring plan
that permitted Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney to buy out his brothers
while maintaining 30 percent interest with his oldest son and Steelers
President Art Rooney II. The plan also allowed for the Pauls and other
investors to buy a stake in the team, although the family would not say
how large of a stake they have in the team. The Pauls, a longtime
Pittsburgh steel family, consists of parents Donna and Robert, sons
Larry and Stephen, and daughter Karen Zimmer.
Elements, a women-only club franchise based in Miami Beach, FL, has
launched a new stock offering program through the parent company,
elements group, according to Christopher Palumbo, founder of elements.
In addition, the company has added Neutrogena International President
Christian Bardin to its board of advisors.

WAVE Manufacturing
introduced its WAVE Pro Elite whole-body vibration machine at the
Athletic Business Conference and Expo, held Dec. 4-6 in San Antonio. The
machine adjusts vibration forces to each user's weight, size and fitness
level. It also features a large exercise surface area, touch screen
interface, optional password protection, preset programming and variable
frequency training. WAVE (Whole-body Advanced Vibration Exercise) was
developed to help users achieve the results of vibration exercise in as
little as 15 minutes, three times a week, but with less stress on
joints, ligaments and tendons than with existing devices.
Everlast Performance
Flooring has added 32 new patterns that feature new colors, higher
color concentrations and more recycled content in the form of Nike Grind
rubber. The new designs bring the total number of pattern options to 54,
which are grouped into three areas: warm-up (neutrals), burn (reds,
oranges, yellows) and cool down (purples, blues and greens).
