In Brief...
A former Life Fitness employee in Olympia, WA, was arrested and
pleaded not guilty to first-degree theft and possession of stolen
property for allegedly taking fitness equipment that had been traded in
or repurchased by the company, then reselling it, according to The
Olympian (WA). Lawrence Ruiz is accused of stealing equipment valued
at more than $117,000. Ruiz allegedly refurbished the equipment, removed
the serial numbers and resold the equipment to athletic clubs, according
to court papers. The practice is alleged to have been taking place since
2001, and Life Fitness began investigating the alleged thefts in 2007,
the newspaper reports.
24 Hour Fitness renewed its partnership with “The Biggest
Loser,” which premiered its seventh season on Tuesday. For the third
season in a row, 24 Hour will send personal trainers on home visits with
eliminated contestants to help them continue to meet their fitness
goals. 24 Hour has also provided contestants with their own in-home
exercise tools, including mats, stability balls and conditioning
bands.

Fitness Formula Clubs, Chicago, has teamed with DMX Inc., a sensory service company, to
provide mobile messaging to its members. Fitness Formula provides a
text-in code that allows potential and existing customers a way to opt
in to receive fitness tips for the year. It also enters customers into a
promotion to win a free membership. Mobile messaging lets clubs gather
demographic information about consumers, and the opt-in function means
no consumer is contacted unwillingly.
