A Peak Fitness employee in Durham, NC, was arrested last week
after he was accused of stealing 500 pounds of weights and attempting to
sell them for $300 to a local used sporting goods store, according to
the Raleigh (NC) News & Observer. Durham police charged Rey
Warren Sanchez Hardi with larceny by an employee and obtaining property
under false pretenses. Peak Fitness’ parent company, Fitness
Management Group Inc., filed for bankruptcy earlier this month.
The Melrose YMCA in
Melrose, MA, announced that Nancy Madden, the Y’s vice president, will
step down Oct. 1. A
community group started an online petition calling for Madden’s
resignation following the arrest of the Y’s former after-school
program coordinator on multiple child rape counts. The group also called
for the resignation of the Y’s president Richard Whitworth, who has
said he will step down Sept. 1.
The JCC at Milken in West
Hills, CA, recently reopened its junior-sized Olympic swimming pool and
spa. The JCC held a ribbon cutting ceremony and invited community
members to tour the renovated facility. Four-time Olympic gold medalist
Lenny Krayzelburg attended the reopening of the pool and said he will
resume operation of his popular Lenny K. Swim Academy at the site.
A town hall meeting on personal trainer legislation will take place
Aug. 8 as part of the DCAC 2009
International Fitness Education Conference and Trade Show, slated
for Aug. 5-9 in Alexandria, VA. Presenters include Sara Meir, executive
director of the International Association of Continuing Education and
Training (IACET); Deborah Warin, executive director for the American
Council on Education; Amy Hyams, IACET commissioner and educational
consultant; and Jay Del Vecchio, moderator and president of operations
for World Instructor Training Schools.

Octane Fitness LLC
recently began fulfilling two large commercial orders for its products
by installing 72 units at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and 62
units for the Kentucky Fire Commission. When the MCV Campus Recreation &
Aquatic Center in the Jonah L. Larrick Student Center at VCU in
Richmond, VA, reopens in August, students will be using 15 Octane
Fitness Pro3700 traditional elliptical cross trainers and five xR6000
xRide seated ellipticals. The Cary Street Recreation Complex at VCU,
which also is being renovated, will offer 41 Octane Pro3700 ellipticals
and 11 xR6000 seated ellipticals later this year.
The Kentucky Fire Commission is taking delivery of 62 Octane Pro3700
ellipticals to specified departments after having used 36 Pro3500XL
models since 2007.
ASF International
released a new business support tool called Dashboard. It was designed
to give up-to-the-minute reports on a health club and its profit
centers to allow club owners to easily pinpoint strengths and
challenges, then quickly take action and correct issues that need to be
addressed. The new business assessment tool is now available to any
client using ASF’s billing services and software, the company
said.
ABC Financial, a club
management software and billing company based in Sherwood, AR, has named
Randy Ivey as its new director of marketing. Ivey, a 12-year veteran of
the fitness club industry, has held similar positions with Aphelion,
CheckFree and Fiserv. “I’m excited to be with the team,” Ivey
said. “ABC Financial has a tradition of excellence, and I’m very
much looking forward to building on that tradition in a time that ABC is
expanding its presence.”
