In Brief...
The YMCA of the USA and the
American Psychological Association
(APA) recently announced a partnership to help busy families improve
their health by eating better and increasing their physical activity
levels. Together, APA and the YMCA plan to offer strategies and tools
for addressing unhealthy lifestyles and behaviors that contribute to
chronic conditions, as well as help parents increase family motivation
for healthier choices. The joint effort will include activities during
the annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day as well as workshops for parents.
Patrick Sustrich joined the staff of Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital
(HGB), Charlotte, MI, as the director of health and wellness services.
Sustrich formerly was the athletics and facility director at the
University Club of Michigan State University. In his new role, he will

The Melrose YMCA in
Melrose, MA, is again the topic of controversy after a 53-year-old
woman, who reportedly suffers from schizophrenia, was left in the
building after it closed one Sunday in July. The woman’s mother
reported her missing after she had not returned from swimming at the Y
by her usual time of 10:30 a.m. The Y closes at 11 a.m. on Sundays. A
policeman who went to the area to check for the woman spotted her
exiting the building, according to the Boston Globe. It was
unclear how many hours the woman was left alone in the building, though
the policeman filed a report just after 3 p.m., the newspaper reported.
The Melrose Y is reportedly updating its emergency contact list and its
routine for closing the facility. The Y has been immersed in a scandal
involving a former Y after-school program coordinator who was accused on
multiple child rape counts.
