Augie Nieto, the Life
Fitness founder who is battling ALS, will appear twice on the Jerry
Lewis MDA Telethon this weekend. Nieto is scheduled to appear at 10:10
p.m. Pacific time on Sunday night with Bally Total Fitness CEO Michael
Sheehan and again at 10:10 a.m. Pacific time on Monday morning with his
wife, Lynne. Host Nancy O’Dell will interview Augie and Lynne Nieto on
Monday morning, and singer John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting will sing
a song he wrote about Augie.
Retro Fitness, Colts
Neck, NJ, has signed a franchise development agreement to open two new
locations in East Norriton, PA, and King of Prussia, PA, bringing the
total number of Retro Fitness clubs in the Philadelphia area to six. The
company plans to add 14 more clubs in that region during the next three
years.
The Jack & Lee
Rosen Southwest Orlando Jewish Community Campus held its grand
opening last weekend. The $5 million, 34,000-square-foot center features
a state-of-the-art fitness center, an air-conditioned gymnasium, a group
exercise/dance studio, locker room facilities, plus 10 newly furnished
preschool classrooms, two new playgrounds, a multipurpose lounge, and
ball fields for outdoor leagues and sports. It was built with donations,
including more than $3.5 million from Orlando hotelier Harris
Rosen.
Howard Ravis, former conference program manager for the Club
Industry trade shows, was honored by the National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA) at its national conference in July with the 2009
NSCA Award of Appreciation at the Bronze Level. Ravis earned this honor
in recognition of his contributions to the association as a host for
Exams on Request.
Boogie Box Fitness is
opening a new Hollywood, CA, flagship location by bringing in Paco
Evangelista, international dance champion and Boogie Box assistant
creative director, to launch Boogie Box at the International Dance
Academy on Sept. 13. Boogie Box is a high-intensity workout that fuses
hip hop and Latin dance, mixed with kickboxing, plyometric exercises and
military drills. Boogie Box started in Southern California and has
spread to more than 25 locations, including Chicago, Las Vegas and New
Jersey, since November 2008.

David Grenewetzki has been named CEO and president of Expresso Fitness, which has recently
closed an equity investment of more than $6 million from Sierra
Ventures, Physic Ventures and Enterprise Partners Venture Capital. The
new funding will enable Expresso Fitness to enhance and accelerate new
features and functionality to its cardio fitness systems as well as
expand sales efforts and support marketing initiatives. Grenewetzki will
be responsible for maintaining Expresso’s growth and improving
business fundamentals.
eFit Financial has
introduced the new eFit Member Access Portal and eCommerce application
as the latest value-added extensions of its Club Advantage management
software program. The new applications empower club operators to offer
their members the convenience and security of 24/7 online access,
scheduling and sales.
California State University at San Bernardino is the latest school
to add green exercise equipment to its student rec center. The college
installed 20 Precor ellipticals
equipped with ReRev technology to
harness user-generated energy from exercising students. Each machine
generates about 100 watts of power per hour. The school also installed
solar panels on some of its buildings to further its green efforts.
