In Brief...
Peak Fitness has
closed its club in Clemmons, NC, the Winston-Salem Journal
reports. Peak Fitness, which closed a club in Winston-Salem last month,
made arrangements to transfer memberships to two nearby clubs. The YMCA
of Northwest North Carolina is looking at the former Peak Fitness in
Winston-Salem as a possible location to open a new YMCA, the newspaper
reported. The parent company of Peak Fitness, Fitness Management Group
Inc., filed for bankruptcy in July.
The Tartan Athletic Club in the Corazon Club & Spa in Dublin, OH,
closed last Sunday, the second time the club has closed in less than a
year, according to Columbus Business First. One-third of the
58,000-square-foot Corazon complex was devoted to the athletic club. The
complex closed last October after it was in business for only 18 months,
the newspaper reported, but creditors reopened the athletic club two
months later while a court-appointed receiver looked for a buyer.
An employee of an LA Fitness
in New Hyde Park, Long Island, NY, was arrested last month along with
two other men after they allegedly broke into the club’s lockers,
Newsday reported. Local police said that two of the men stole
cash, cell phones, jewelry and other valuables belonging to gym members
from the lockers while the third man stood on lookout, the newspaper
reported.
A former employee of a Life Time Fitness in Commerce
Township, MI, pleaded guilty last month to spying on a woman taking a
shower at the club while her baby was nearby in a car seat, according to
a local media report. William Ruiz used his cell phone to take photos of
the woman in the shower. Life Time fired Ruiz after the incident
occurred earlier this year. He is expected to be sentenced Sept.

The St. Paul JCC held its
own version of the federal Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), a.k.a.
Cash for Clunkers program, by offering a “community upgrade” that
gives people who are unhappy with their current health clubs a 20
percent discount off their first year’s membership at the JCC. During
the JCC’s community upgrade program, which began Sept. 1 and runs
through Oct. 15, people must show their membership card from other clubs
at the JCC office to earn the discount. The JCC said the offer will be
honored through May 2010 but will require further documentation showing
a membership expiration date.
