The Merritt Athletic
Clubs, Baltimore, now owns the building in which its Canton, MD,
club is located. An entity owned by the Merritt Family Trust, an
affiliate of Leroy Merritt, founder and chairman of Merritt Properties,
recently purchased the building from the former landlord. The
55,000-square-foot building features a full-service health club,
indoor/outdoor pool, basketball court, three squash courts, physical
therapy office and full-service day spa.
The Gold’s Gym at
the Shoppes in Old Bridge (NJ) celebrated its grand opening on Sept.
12 complete with fitness demonstrations, hors d’oeuvres and a fountain
flowing with sangria. Club owner Mark Steinfield also owns Gold’s Gyms
in Long Branch, Point Pleasant Beach and Howell, NJ. Ross Franklin
serves as the general manager of the Gold’s in Old Bridge.

The Cybex Arc Trainer
received its 10th utility patent, the company recently announced. The
patent relates to the “unique function” of the Arc Trainer. It
demonstrates how the Arc Trainer is creating a completely new equipment
category that independent studies have shown offer a significantly
superior workout, according to a statement from Cybex. The Arc Trainer
is the only fitness equipment to feature an adaptive power training
mode, which means the faster a user goes, the more resistance is
encountered. The product also offers patent-pending, same-side forward
technology, a motion in which the arm and leg on the same side move
together.
City Blends Smoothie Café
Ltd. introduced a new modified system called the City MiNi program.
This new system is a compact, hand-pour program that uses a powerful
tabletop blender, in lieu of the original BD-8 Blender Dispenser. The
program lets club owners offer the same City Blends smoothie menu to
their customers where space and finances are limited. The City MiNi
program is a more economical option for customers looking to add a
smoothie bar at a lower buy-in cost.

creator of Total Gym and the GRAVITY System, hired Fiona Tanous as
senior account manager for its rehab and wellness division. Tanous has
14 years of experience in marketing, business development and
management, most recently working in strategic marketing for HD Supply,
developing business strategies for the health care market.

Rock, AR, will attend the Gold’s Gym Franchisee Association Owners
Conference, which will be held Oct. 4-6 in New York. ABC Financial also
