Anytime Fitness,
Hastings, MN, announced a franchise agreement with entrepreneur Rodrigo
Chavez to open 100 clubs in Mexico within the next five years. Chavez, a
Mexico native who moved to Texas five years ago, says he’ll open the
first Anytime Fitness club in Mexico within the next six months. His
goal is to open five clubs within a year, 50 clubs within three years
and more than 100 clubs by 2014. “We are thrilled about Mr. Chavez’s
plans for Mexico,” Anytime Fitness Vice President of International
Development John Kersh said. “He is a very savvy businessman with the
skills and experience to help Anytime Fitness thrive
internationally.”
Gold’s Gym International,
Irving, TX, recently promoted Chris Finch to senior director of
international franchising and Paul Summers to senior director of U.S.
franchising. Both had served as regional field managers for Gold’s.
Finch will oversee the day-to-day operations of the franchise business,
and Summers will support the Gold’s field staff in the U.S.
market.
The University of Arizona
received a $15 million stimulus grant from the federal Recovery Act to
build a solar research program that will investigate thin-film solar
cells in conjunction with Global Solar, Tucson, AZ. The university also
said it will construct all new buildings to be Silver LEED certified. In
May,
the school added solar photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters to
the rooftop of its student rec center and said it planned to use solar
power to heat its 600,000-gallon rec center swimming pool.
The National Swimming Pool
Foundation (NSPF) board awarded $14,500 in scholarships and
fellowships to 11 students for the 2009-2010 school year. The
scholarship program celebrates the NSPF commitment to education by
helping certified pool/spa operator certification graduates and their
family members pursue higher education. The fellowship program was
established to encourage and support graduate students and post-doctoral
fellows who are performing risk reduction or health benefit research
related to aquatic activities and/or venues, such as swimming pools,
spas/hot tubs, therapy pools and water parks.
Four executives from Fitness Together Holdings, Inc., parent company
of Fitness Together and
elements therapeutic massage, inc., completed the Boulder Marathon Relay
on Sept. 20 and ranked sixth among the 44 relay teams competing. Jeff
Jervik, president and CEO of Fitness Together Holdings, Bob Haimes,
executive vice president and chief growth officer of Fitness Together
Holdings, Kevin Betts, chief operating officer and senior vice president
of Fitness Together Franchise Corp., and Kyle Gjersee, senior vice
president of operations and chief operating officer for elements
therapeutic massage, formed a relay team and completed the 26.2 miles
beginning and ending at the Boulder Reservoir.

UNICUS Fitness Services
said 34 employees of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) taking
part in its Corporate Fitness Challenge lost a total of 343 pounds in
four months. The challenge is a six-month wellness campaign designed to
improve a company's physical and financial health. The Des Plaines,
IL-based FAA employees met with UNICUS professionals for personalized
fitness coaching and counseling.
