IRVINE, CA -- Star Trac has signed a purchasing agreement
with Michael Bruno, who acquired a controlling interest in the Irvine,
CA-based manufacturer’s parent company, Unisen Inc. Bruno is the owner
and founder of manufacturer Land America Health and Fitness Co., Xiamen,
China.

Robin Klaus took over the CEO role on July 1 after Jim Mizes, who had
been with Club One for eight years, left.

PHOENIX -- After narrowly escaping bankruptcy in 2004, Grand
Canyon University (GCU) recently broke ground on a $60 million campus

This October, you won’t want to miss the Club
Industry Conference and Trade Show in Chicago. Richard Simmons will
offer the first-day keynote, and Curt Beusman, founder of the Saw Mill
Club, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The second-day
keynoter is Bill Rancic, the first winner of “The Apprentice” TV

podcast.) The conference also will feature a group exercise
competition, great seminars and an exhibit hall floor filled with
products.

In August, Crunch,
New York, will open its second announced franchise club. The
23,000-square-foot club in Lake Forest, CA, will occupy a former Bally
Total Fitness. Last month, Crunch
announced its first franchise club opening, scheduled for September
in a suburb of Portland, OR.
Anytime Fitness,
Hastings, MN, will open as many as 150 clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands
and Luxembourg over the next 10 years. Petro Hameleers of the
Netherlands, who signed the master franchise agreement, says his first
club could open as early as January 2011. Last month, Anytime
Fitness announced it had attained a master franchise agreement in
Japan.
In a ceremony last week, the U.S. Army dedicated the new Monti
Physical Fitness Center at Fort Drum, NY.
Formerly the Pine Plains Fitness Center, the center was renamed to honor
Sgt. First Class Jared Monti, who died in 2006. Monti, who served in the
3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009
for his honorable and heroic actions in Afghanistan. His team was
reportedly occupying a surveillance position where they were attacked by
enemy forces. Monti rushed under heavy fire to assist two wounded
comrades. Only two soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division have ever
received a Medal of Honor.
The YMCA
of McKeesport Wellness Center recently held a grand opening in its
new location. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the McKeesport Hospital
Foundation and a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center, the Y was able to upgrade equipment and rent space across from
the medical center for a nominal fee. The Y was formerly housed in a
90-year-old building in need of repair. The YMCA of McKeesport plans to
merge with the YMCA
of Greater Pittsburgh by late August or early September.

Life Fitness,
Schiller Park, IL, recently donated $7,500 to Back On My Feet, a nonprofit
organization that presents a structured training program for the
homeless to encourage self-sufficiency and confidence. With chapters
currently in Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and soon
Chicago, Back On My Feet promotes running as a way to help the homeless
lead better lives. In addition to its donation, Life Fitness employees
also will volunteer as running mentors when the Chicago chapter opens
later this year.
ABC Financial, Little
Rock, AR, launched a new electronic kiosk designed to provide a
self-service option to fitness club members. The kiosk, which features
ABC’s MYiCLUBonline, is available to ABC Financial customers
nationwide and arrives preconfigured and ready to use. It does not
require a dedicated connection and runs off of existing wired or
wireless Internet service. The complete system costs $1,499. ABC
Financial also will unveil its updated software, DataTrak 2.8, on Monday
at the Gold’s Gym convention in Las Vegas. The software will be
available to ABC customers on July 25.
efi Sports Medicine,
San Diego, has launched its GravityClubhouse Blog, an
online community created for fitness and wellness professionals and
facilities offering efi’s Gravity on Total Gym small group, personal
training, Pilates or post-rehab programming. The blog complements
efi’s GravityClubhouse.com online
education program, which offers ongoing workout programs, DVDs and
executive incentives at no cost to members.
PPG Industries Inc., maker of the Accu-Tab
Chlorination System, recently released an informational
advisory
called “Being Green, Staying Clean: Protecting the Environment and
Your Patrons.” It provides actionable information on greenhouse gas
emissions and best practices for swimming pool owners and operators on
how to manage their carbon footprint without sacrificing water quality.
The advisory also provides practical ideas for implementing green
practices at recreational water facilities, lists potential questions
that pool owners and operators should ask themselves and suggests
third-party resources.
