As the home of the Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) men's and women's basketball teams, Leggett and Platt Athletic Center often plays host to visitors. The athletics season is over for this academic year, but the facility, along with others on the school's Joplin, MO, campus, recently has been bustling with guests for a number of other occasions that range from joyous to tragic.

  • Bally Total Fitness, Chicago, will open a new Bally Sport club in July in Lansdowne, MD. The 40,000-square-foot club will feature a digital Bally Results Center that includes technology designed to guide and motivate members as they reach their fitness goals. The club also will include an Olympic-style pool, sauna and whirlpool, cardio and strength training equipment, a Pilates and yoga studio, a dedicated cycling studio, group exercise classes (including Zumba), racquetball courts, martial arts, a kids club and a juice bar.
  • 24 Hour Fitness, San Ramon, CA, is celebrating the upcoming Memorial Day holiday by welcoming members of the military community and other guests to work out free of charge. The promotion, which began Monday and lasts through Tuesday, May 31, is open to all active, reserved and retired members of the U.S. armed forces and nonmembers.
  • Crunch, New York, has opened its 10th franchise club in the San Diego suburb of El Cajon, CA. The 20,000-square-foot club is expected to open this summer in a former department store in Westside Parkway Plaza Mall. The owner is John Romeo.
  • Anytime Fitness, Hastings, MN, is celebrating the company's millionth member by giving away more than $400,000 worth of free annual memberships in its Feel Like a Million campaign. Almost 700 Anytime Fitness clubs have chosen one or more members to receive the scholarships at about $500 each.
  • The Salvation Army Kroc Center in Omaha, NE, has received a $10,000 grant for its Healthy Home Project from The General Mills Foundation. The project, which commences this fall, aims to improve the health of up to 60 families annually by educating them about nutrition, healthy cooking and exercise. The grant is one of 50 awarded annually to nonprofits as part of the Champions for Healthy Kids initiative sponsored by General Mills, the American Dietetic Association Foundation and the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.
  • Island Health and Fitness, Ithaca, NY, received a certificate of commendation for saving the life of a 46-year-old man who had a cardiac arrest while swimming. The commendation says, "Early recognition of this medical emergency and activation of all the components of the chain of survival resulted in a very positive outcome for this patient."

  • ABC Financial, Little Rock, AR, announced the return of Dennis Holcom as the company's vice president of sales for the West Coast. Holcom, who most recently served as vice president of sales at Motionsoft, has more than 22 years of experience in the fitness industry. He was one of the top sales representatives during his four years at ABC, according to the company.
  • Med-Fit Systems Inc., Fallbrook, CA, manufacturer of Nautilus commercial products, announced a partnership with First Nations Capital Partners, a Southern California investment fund. The partnership will allow Med-Fit Systems to facilitate its growth and utilize its manufacturing facilities in Virginia, according to the company.
