  • LA Fitness, Irvine, CA, plans to open its seventh club in the Pittsburgh area by the end of the year, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The 23,289-square-foot club will occupy two stories in the former Joseph-Beth Booksellers space in the SouthSide Works district, according to the newspaper.
  • A World Gym club in New Braunfels, TX, closed after 14 years in operation, according to San Antonio TV station KENS 5. A note on the door informed members that the owners closed the club because of the economy. A spokesperson for World Gym told the TV station that the club was independently owned.
  • A man died after he was found unconscious in a pool at California Family Fitness Center in Elk Grove, CA, according to the Elk Grove Citizen. The victim was identified by Sacramento County coroners as 45-year-old Jesse Lee Morton. Members saw Morton swimming laps in the pool on July 24 and later noticed he was not moving, according to the newspaper. CPR was performed on Morton after he was pulled out of the water, and he was rushed to a local hospital but had gone into cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead, the newspaper reported.
  • The Mid-Atlantic Club Management (MACMA) held its annual conference in Ellicott City, MD, on Thursday, July 14, at the Turf Valley Resort. 2011 awards of excellence were presented to the Columbia Association, Columbia, MD, for overall programming and sales programming, and L&T Health and Fitness, Falls Church, VA, for retention programming. Scholarships also were awarded to health and fitness professionals Denise Jenkins, Sherwood Minor and John Criscuoli of the Columbia Association as well as Katie Price of Lifebridge Health and Fitness, Baltimore.

  • Les Mills International, Auckland, New Zealand, announced Steven Renata will serve as CEO of San Francisco-based Les Mills West Coast Inc. He previously worked for the company as the global sales director and is an original stockholder and founding employee. "I am really excited to take on this role and feel very fortunate to be championing group exercise in the United States at a time when group exercise is at the tipping point of a huge expansion," Renata says.

  • Michael Scott Scudder has acquired majority managing partner interest in Fitness Industry Group (FIG), Taos, NM. FIG was previously managed by Sherry Robb, its creator, who will continue to serve as a consulting partner and media specialist.
