Town Sports International (TSI), New York, is honoring first responders to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with a discounted membership. The $20-per-month membership is available to police, firefighters, EMS workers and military personnel for life. Four of TSI's downtown New York Sports Clubs were closed on Sept. 11, 2001, due to damage in the days following the attacks. The club on Wall Street opened as a 24-hour comfort center for World Trade Center rescue and relief workers. "With the 10th anniversary of September 11th upon us, we continue to honor all first responders to let them know that we are truly grateful for all of their hard work and sacrifice," Bob Giardina, president and CEO of TSI, said in a statement.
Urban Active, Lexington, KY, held a grand opening last month for its new club in Dublin, OH. The 35,000-square-foot club is the company's eighth club in the Columbus, OH, area. Among those in attendance at the grand opening were former NFL and Ohio State football player Jim Lachey, along with several other Ohio State alumni. Urban Active was No. 11 on Club Industry's Top 100 Clubs list this year.
Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler filed charges last week against five health club owners in that state. Gansler said GRS Fitness LLC and its owner, Bernard Caplan Jr., misled members about their cancellation rights and collected prohibited fees. In a separate filing, Gansler charged four other club owners for failing to register with his office, as required by state law. Those four clubs and owners are Arm 1 LLC, Raphael Marcantoni IV; Dynamic Defense Inc., William David Stoffregen II; Reducing Key Hypnosis Center of Glen Burnie Inc., Samuel Baldwin; and Team Maryland BJJ Inc., Nicholas Tissue.
City council members in Albuquerque, NM, voted Monday at a public hearing to allow a strip club located across the parking lot from a Defined Fitness club to remain put, according to media reports. Defined Fitness, Albuquerque, NM, had argued the health club's day care center should be considered a school and said the strip club violates zoning laws.

TRX, San Francisco, is ranked No. 12 out of 50 selected companies on Outside magazine's fourth annual Best Places to Work list. This is the third year in a row TRX has been honored on the list and the second consecutive year it has been ranked in the top 15. "We're thrilled to be recognized for the third consecutive year as this is a testament to our belief that healthy and active employees are more productive, motivated, and less stressed both in and out of the workplace," TRX CEO Randy Hetrick said in a statement.
Les Mills International, Auckland, New Zealand, is launching its Bodypump barbell workout program and CXWORX 30-minute core training class program at all eight Gold's Gyms in the Los Angeles area on Saturday. Steven Renata, CEO of Les Mills West Coast, will be one of six Les Mills International master trainers on hand to lead classes for the launch events. "Angel Banos and his gyms are icons of the fitness industry, and we know they expect and demand the best," Renata said in a statement. "We have a great partnership with Gold's Gym in a number of locations, and we're looking forward to launching our iconic Bodypump program and new CXWORX core training program to their L.A. members."
ABC Financial, Little Rock, AR, announced plans to provide billing and software services to a club chain in Vancouver, Canada, one month after the company announced its launch into Canada. "We felt Canada was an emerging market that needed to be greater explored. It was vital for ABC Financial to aggressively pursue this market and increase our international presence," Steve Ayers, senior vice president of sales and marketing for ABC Financial, said in a statement.
