  • Work Out World, Brick, NJ, announced a partnership with Wellness Layers Inc., a provider of online and mobile health and wellness community portals, that will provide an integrated, goal-oriented member and trainer social fitness portal. Work Out World club schedules, alerts, events, promotions and activities are available within the portal and can be disseminated to members locally and in real-time via feeds and messaging. The next phase of the portal will include accessibility via mobile apps.
  • Charter Fitness Franchising LLC, Orland Park, IL, has been approved to franchise its clubs nationally. Upon the announcement on Sept. 1, 38 Cardinal Fitness clubs in the Chicagoland area, northwest Indiana and downstate Illinois were converted to Charter Fitness, bringing the number of Charter Fitness clubs to 46 in six states. "Offering Charter Fitness franchises allows us to bring the high-value/low-cost Charter Fitness brand to more communities," says Justin Veihman, director of franchise operations for Charter Fitness.
  • The Salvation Army celebrated the opening of its latest Kroc Center this month. The $16 million Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi, MS, features a fitness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardio equipment, a group exercise studio, a 1/4-mile outdoor running/walking trail; a gymnasium that can be used for basketball and other team sports and activities, and an aquatic center with lap pool, recreation pool and various kid-friendly water features.
  • A new fitness center has opened at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda, MD. The 45,000-square-foot facility features a 50-meter indoor pool, indoor running track, racquetball and basketball courts and strength and cardio equipment. The center's group exercise studios will offer a range of programming including indoor cycling, yoga, boot camp-style classes and several Les Mills programs. The facility is open to civilian and enlisted base employees.
  • My Destination Wellness, a Milwaukee-based provider of fitness vacations and a partner of Funjet Vacations, is bringing the gym to the beach with a vacation-meets-fitness challenge called the Gym Rat Race from Feb. 16-20, 2012, in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The Gym Rat Race is an obstacle run that helps gym-goers and those sticking to New Year's resolutions to get tropical vacations during the winter months, while continuing their fitness agendas. The package includes exercise classes and personal training and evaluation sessions, as well as healthy meals and a cooking demonstration with take-home recipes. My Destination Wellness is encouraging club operators to promote this event to its membership, as teams of six will compete against other teams of six.   • Iron Grip Barbell Co., Santa Ana, CA, has introduced a new consulting service to assist its corporate customers who want to update their free weight selection. The Iron Grip Refresh Program is designed to help facility operators choose the right quantity and types of equipment for their clientele. Program participants also can take advantage of competitively priced delivery and installation plans as well as assistance in reselling and recycling their old equipment or donating it to charity.
  • Interactive Fitness Holdings (IFH), Sunnyvale, CA, has appointed Chris McGill as its senior director of sales. McGill, who has previously held sales positions at Freemotion Fitness and Precor, will oversee IFH's Expresso brand indoor cycles. "One cannot ask for a stronger force to help drive the resurgence of the Expresso brand in the marketplace," Dan Toigo, IFH's vice president of sales, says of McGill. IFH recently added several new interactive features to the Expresso line, including software that allows users to choose from a variety of virtual rides and then instantly share the results of their workouts with friends and other users through social media sites and mobile apps.
  • Med-Fit Systems Inc., the Fallbrook, CA-based manufacturer of Nautilus commercial products, has agreed to purchase all assets of the SportKAT Co., Vista, CA. The SportKAT product line will enhance Med-Fit Systems' ability to service and expand upon the more than 1,000 long-term care facilities utilizing Nautilus strength products to improve patient function and reduce cost of care, the company says. Med-Fit Systems plans to meld the operations into its Virginia manufacturing facilities and relocate SportKAT's southern California employees to its Fallbrook location.
  • Motionsoft hosted a webinar earlier today on how gym operators can increase profit margins through smart reporting and empowering their managers. The seminar included the science behind pricing strategy, incremental revenue and how to increase manager accountability through reporting.   • TurboRoster, an online platform that combines fitness programs with social media, has contracted with World Gym of East Setauket (NY). Through TurboRoster.com, the fitness facility clientele will be able to register for group classes and personal training sessions online, and link the information to their social media profiles, such as Facebook or Twitter. Upon registration, members will automatically be enrolled in a rewards system where they can earn TurboBucks that can be redeemed for items and services at the club or through affiliate partners of TurboRoster. World Gym of East Setauket is the 19th club to utilize TurboRoster's services.
