  • Town Sports International (TSI), New York, has named Todd Shugarman as its vice president of real estate. Shugarman most recently served as the senior vice president of Virginia-based Sunrise Senior Living, operators of more than 300 senior living communities in North America and the United Kingdom. He has more than 20 years of real estate development experience, gained with companies such as Starbucks and Balducci's. "The addition of Todd provides hands-on leadership to the team at a time when our new club development is gaining momentum," Bob Giardina, CEO of TSI, said in a statement.
  • Anytime Fitness, Hastings, MN, named its top franchisee and honored several members last week at its annual conference in Washington, DC. Andy Gundlach of Madison, WI, was named Franchisee of the Year and Turnaround Club Operator of the Year. Gundlach owns 14 Anytime Fitness clubs and revitalized a club in Portage, WI. The company also recognized national member success story winners, including 71-year-old Betty Lou Sweeney of Plover, WI, who recently set the world record for abdominal planking by holding the position for 36 minutes, 58 seconds.
  • A World Gym in Racine, WI, closed last week, according to the Racine Journal Times. The gym, which opened in 2004, owed more than $180,000 in back rent, according to the newspaper. The property owners of the shopping center which housed the World Gym filed a complaint for eviction on Sept. 12, and a judge signed the eviction order on Oct. 3, the newspaper reported.
  • A personal trainer and co-owner of three fitness facilities is free on $100,000 bond after his arrest last week on one count of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, according to the Fernandina Beach (FL) News-Leader. Doug Lane was arrested in Fernandina Beach at Club 14 Fitness, which he owns. Lane also owns CrossFit Amelia Island and CrossFit Sandbox. A court date will be set for Lane's arraignment in the next few weeks, the newspaper reported.
  • The wooden flooring in one of the student gyms at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, will have to be restored after a leak led to severe water damage. The South Gym in the school's Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center is used for basketball, volleyball, badminton and various other sports and recreation events.
  • Premier Fitness Camp, a fitness boot camp resort in Park City, UT, has opened a location within the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA, which is undergoing a $50 million renovation. Just like its first location, Premier Fitness Camp's second location offers adult fitness programs that teach people to implement sustainable lifestyle choices. Placing the programming at the La Costa Resort and Spa allows members to take advantage of La Costa's 400 acres of coastal landscape, which includes a full-service spa and salon that was recently named the No. 1 Resort Spa in Southern California by Spa Magazine.

  • ABC Financial, Little Rock, AR, will demonstrate six new feature upgrades to its DataTrak software this week at the Club Industry show in Chicago. The software updates on display are gift cards, an iPhone app, tiered sales commissions, a member event enrollment kiosk, a data warehouse, and online purchasing and booking for personal training.
  • Precor Inc., Woodinville, WA, has hired Tom Hull as the vice president of sales for the Americas, a position previously held by Chris Torggler, who is now general manager of Precor Strength. Hull brings to Precor leadership experience in the technology industry and credentials in the fields of sports and health. Most recently, he served as vice president and executive committee member at Attachmate Corp., a provider of enterprise software systems, where he led North American sales and consulting operations for the company's Attachmate and NetIQ business units. Before joining Attachmate in 2003, he spent nearly 20 years in leadership positions with firms including RealNetworks, Sequent and IBM. Hull was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic rowing team, and he remains an active competitor in masters racing. He serves on the board of the YMCA of Greater Seattle.
  • Cybex International, Medway, MA, is partnering with Total Woman Gym and Day Spa, Westlake Village, CA, in its Total Woman of the Year contest. Cybex is providing promotional support through its social media networks and key partners. The contest is to recognize women who have shown a commitment to creating a healthy community, made a difference in someone's life, achieved success in home and professional lives, performed an act of heroism or actively volunteered for a nonprofit. One winner will be chosen from each of the 11 Total Woman Gym and Day Spa locations. Those winners will receive a one-year gym membership to Total Woman, as well as a year of spa services.
  • The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has developed a free gift option that fitness professionals can share with their clients to keep them motivated. The ACE Get Fit Holiday Gift Book is filled with coupons featuring workout ideas, offers and exclusive tips, all created to encourage individuals to stay active and engaged in their fitness goals. The gift book can be downloaded for free at www.ACEFitness.org. Professionals also can refer their clients to ACE's free suite of online resources at ACEFitness.org's dedicated holiday page. The page includes workouts to burn extra holiday calories, suggested fitness-related gifts and a wellness prescription for 2012 that will make those New Year's resolutions easier to stick to.
  • W.I.T.S. (World Instructor Training Schools), Virginia Beach, VA, unveiled a joint partnership with Education to Go (ed2go) to offer the blended/hybrid personal trainer certification and various other certification and continuing education courses. The release date is Jan. 1, 2012, for the blended/hybrid version. Live courses are still offered in six- to nine-week models. The blended/hybrid course includes 15 hours of instructor-assisted online education, practical hands-on training labs held at regional locations over a four-day period and a 30-hour internship.

    What do you think about this Wall Street Journal article noting that health clubs have come to the rescue of malls and shopping centers?

    Every time a "Town Center" pops up in my area an LA Fitness is sure to follow lately. While I'm sure they are getting anchor status it is still out of the range of most small companies (20 + psf)…

    Keep in mind that a much of this article is referring to the discount gym franchises that will take any space available as long as it's cheap. When the economy bounces back landlords may not be so excited that they have 10 PF's on the books.
