Julian Robertson has been named chairman of Forstmann Little and Co., the parent company of 24 Hour Fitness, San Ramon, CA, just days after the passing of founder Ted Forstmann. In addition to 24 Hour, Robertson, 79, will provide counsel to Forstmann Little regarding its other two remaining portfolio companies, IMG Worldwide and ENK International, a trade show organization for the fashion industry. FINalternatives.com reports that Forstmann's fund formally expires on June 30, 2012, and it is legally required to sell its assets. Dealbook reports the firm has been in discussions regarding a deadline extension.
A building that had housed historic Frantz Gym as well as a fitness center and a mail-order powerlifting equipment business burned on Monday in Aurora, IL, according to local media reports. The building was owned by Ernie Frantz, who has won more than 30 weightlifting world championships. The 11,000-square-foot building, which was listed for sale at $295,000, suffered $200,000 in damage from the fire, according to a report. No cause had been determined as of Tuesday afternoon. The building was mostly vacant as Frantz moved his business in January 2010. However, local officials estimate that about $100,000 worth of equipment was damaged or destroyed in the fire.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) selected Aquila to manage its on-site lifestyle fitness centers and health promotion programs in several locations in the metro areas of Atlanta and Washington, DC, Aquila announced. Aquila will provide the CDC with fitness, wellness and health promotion services, fitness facility management and on-site fitness and health promotion staff. Aquila also will manage the CDC's nutritional educational initiatives, wellness and sustainability programs, and lifestyle safety programming. This latest contract acquisition brings the number of Aquila's managed facilities to more than 40 in the United States and Europe.
Columbus State University, Columbus, GA, has announced that paid memberships to its recreation center, which opened in January, are now available to the school's alumni. The facility already was accessible to current students, faculty and staff.

Star Trac, Irvine, CA, recently expanded its Southern California showroom by 3,000 square feet. The showroom features 8,000 square feet of equipment with more than 20 cardiovascular units, 50 selectorized strength machines, benches and racks, a dedicated Spinning and cross training studio featuring 22 Spinner bikes, and the full line of HumanSport. Customers can take a Star Trac Customer Experience tour and are encouraged to bring their workout gear for demonstrations. The facility also features men's and women's locker rooms and showers available for visitors. Star Trac will open an additional showroom early next year in Youngstown, OH.
The Cybex Research Institute (CRI) named Angela Corcoran as its director of education, the research arm of Cybex International, Medway, MA, announced. Corcoran will collaborate with CRI Executive Director Paul Juris in the development of educational content for Cybex team members and the greater fitness community. Corcoran previously held a teaching fellow position at the Cybex Research Institute and was the principle educator and founder of Corcoran Fitness, where she was involved in community outreach, facilitating natural links between health, fitness and wellness providers and at-risk communities. Corcoran also served as the director of education for the Focus Personal Training Institute and was a regional fitness manager for Equinox.
