Cuts in the Missouri state budget have caused administrators at some Missouri university rec centers to curtail spending. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced last week a $106 million cut to higher education for the 2013 fiscal year budget, which is a 12.5 percent cut. For Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, the cuts translate into $10 million lost for next year, which led the university to push back completion of its $30 million, 100,000-square-foot Bill R. Foster and Family Recreation Center to spring or summer 2012, several months beyond its original deadline of fall 2011. Also in response to the cuts, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO, will close its Foster Aquatic Center within the next 90 days, which will allow completion of swimming lessons, lifeguard training and student employment terms.
