It also will be the 36th Crunch club to open worldwide. "We are thrilled to open our much-anticipated Crunch location in Burbank and expand our brand footprint in the Los Angeles area," Crunch President Keith Worts said in a statement. • Total Woman Gym and Day Spa, Westlake Village, CA, is celebrating National Women's History Month by hosting open house parties and celebrations at its 13 locations in Southern California. • Les Mills International, Auckland, New Zealand, is unveiling its new barbell weights system called Les Mills Smartbar this week at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association Show in Los Angeles. The system will officially launch at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Les Mills booth (2310). The Smartbar has an ergonomic design and uses a "gator" fastening mechanism with retractable teeth for weight transitions. "The barbell weights system hasn't changed much at all for decades," Vaughan Schwass, CEO of Les Mills Enterprises at Les Mills International, said in a statement. "Our research shows that most people found fastening and changing weight plates during exercise pretty slow and cumbersome, so we've kept user-testing at the front of our design process and have completely reinvented traditional barbell design."

  • The MyZone Physical Activity Belt recently hit a milestone, measuring its 25 millionth burned calorie in 2012. The MyZone system wirelessly measures users' exercise data, organizing it into accounts and rewarding users with effort points. The system rewards points based on the effort level of the exerciser rather than the number of times they work out, says Dave Wright, creator of MyZone. Not only has the system measured 25 million burned calories, but Mike Leveque, former president of Star Trac and now COO at CFM (the global distributor for MyZone), says it also has measured 38,000 individual workout sessions, 3 million minutes of exercise and 6 million effort points.

  • Correction: In last week's Newsbeat, we mistakenly listed Technogym as being headquartered in Woodinville, WA. It is actually in Seattle. We apologize for the error. Here is the corrected news item:
Technogym, Seattle, and Advantage Fitness Products (AFP), Santa Monica, CA, have entered into a strategic partnership in which AFP will represent Technogym's products in the university, residential property development, country club and certain hospitality markets. AFP is a full-service consultancy that provides amenity-focused fitness facility planning, design and supply. AFP will work to extend the growth and exposure of Technogym in the United States. "AFP's expertise and discerning client base coupled with our highly differentiated product offering and global strength represents a special fit for us in the North American market," said Ivo Grossi, director of sales for Technogym USA.
