Litigation Concerns in the Fitness Industry Lead to Meeting
Litigation against fitness facilities and equipment manufacturers is on the mind of more people in the fitness industry after the $66 million judgment and the $19.5 million settlement in the Barnhard vs. Cybex International lawsuit, according to several people in the industry. That concern led some manufacturers and fitness facility operators to meet about litigation at the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) conference on March 14 in Los Angeles.

  • Planet Fitness, Newington, NH, will hold its third annual promotion to raise funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, an organization that funds scientific research for the prevention and cure of breast cancer. For the promotion, Planet Fitness will donate $10 to the foundation for every new member who signs up at one of the more than 320 participating locations. The promotion, which began Monday, runs through April 4. Through its last two promotions, Planet Fitness, which has more than 3.5 million members, raised $592,522 for the foundation.
  • GNC Holdings Inc. will be an official sponsor of the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games, the sixth annual fitness competition that will be held July 13-15 in Carson, CA. Athletes from around the world will compete to be crowned Fittest on Earth. The CrossFit Games, which Forbes magazine recently called one of the fastest-growing sports in America, will include nearly 70,000 competitors, participants both online and through CrossFit-affiliated gyms. Competitors are given challenges such as running, rowing, rope climbs and obstacle courses. "We believe the Games are the ultimate test of fitness, and partners like GNC help support our search for the fittest man and woman on earth," Jimi Letchford, chief marketing officer of CrossFit Inc., Washington, DC, said in a statement.
  • The owner of LAVA 24 Fitness in downtown Savannah, GA, has been evicted, and the club will reopen under new management, TV station WTOC reported Monday. LAVA had taken over a space in 2010 vacated by the Downtown Athletic Club, followed by another gym that closed after a few months, the TV station reported.
  • Endurance Fitness Center in Caledonia, MI, closed earlier this month, station WOOD-TV 8 reported. Jeni Rummelt, the former owner of the club, says current owners Mike O’Dowd and Ben Reynolds owe her $120,000, the TV station reported. Rummelt, who removed the equipment from the facility and stored it in a nearby facility, plans to reopen the gym as Caledonia Fitness.

  • Motionsoft, Rockville, MD, a financial services provider, announced that Club One, San Francisco, has launched MoSo, Motionsoft's cloud-based facility management software, in three of its locations. All remaining Club One locations will launch MoSo later this year. Club One will use MoSo for facility management and improving member relationships.
  • VicteliB, St. Peters, MO, introduced its new program, Kids Kamp Challenge. The program, created after a study linked being overweight in childhood to obesity during adulthood, is being introduced to school districts and fitness facilities nationwide. VicteliB, the creator of Boot Camp Challenge, uses team-building in all of its programs to encourage self-confidence and personal success. The goal of Kids Kamp Challenge is to train the next generation to demand healthy lifestyles, from healthful snacks at the movie theater to fitness options in schools. Kids Kamp Challenge was created for kids by kids and is dedicated to moving and educating its members.
  • World Sales Alliance Inc., Elgin, IL, a fitness sales and marketing company, has partnered with Don Oliver Fitness Equipment to market its group pump kits worldwide. Don Oliver Fitness equipment, a fitness equipment manufacturer and supplier, produces the pump kits in New Zealand. The weights are made with iron sand, a resource found only on the volcanic coastline. The pump equipment line offers a commercial club kit that includes a storage rack with 20 handheld sets.
  • Balanced Body, Sacramento, CA, a resource for Pilates equipment and education, was recognized for a third consecutive year with the 2011 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) award. The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery administers the WRAP award at the end of each year for companies with environmentally friendly business strategies. Balanced Body founder and CEO Ken Endelman says the company has recycled 74 percent of its waste, more than 133 tons.
