  • Town Sports International (TSI), New York, and Life Time Fitness, Chanhassen, MN, will be presenting at the Piper Jaffray 32nd Annual Consumer Conference next week in New York. TSI will present at 9:15 a.m. ET on June 5, and Life Time will present at 12:30 p.m. ET on June 6. Robert Giardina, president and CEO, and Dan Gallagher, CFO, will host the presentation for TSI. Michael Robinson, executive vice president and CFO, will host Life Time's presentation.
  • Anytime Fitness, Hastings, MN, has signed a lease for a new club in Chandler, AZ. Anytime Fitness will develop a 5,100-square-foot space into the facility, which will include cardiovascular equipment, personal training, strength training, and functional training. The Anytime Fitness will be managed by Cindy Kjos.
  • CKO Kickboxing, Hoboken, NJ, will hold a grand opening of its newest franchised location Saturday in Jacksonville, NC. The facility will serve the military and their families stationed in Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point Air Station, Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson and Marine Corps Air Station New River. The facility will offer a 10 percent discount to current and former service personnel, police officers and firefighters. The franchisee, Sarah Bentley, is a former Marine Corps sergeant.
  • A man was charged with fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct stemming from an incident on May 15 at an LA Fitness club in Apple Valley, MN, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Sourisack Sihanantharath is accused of touching a woman and forcing her to touch him sexually in the hot tub at the club, according to a complaint filed last week. Sihanantharath admitted to sexually touching the woman but told police it was consensual, the newspaper reported.
  • Brown University, Providence, RI, dedicated its $46 million aquatics and fitness center on Friday. The 84,000-square-foot facility includes an aquatics center with a 56-meter pool for varsity and recreational use and a seating area that can accommodate 800, the Associated Press reported. It also has a fitness center for students, faculty and staff, a strength and conditioning center for varsity athletes and sports teams, and three exercise studios. The university broke ground in May 2010 and opened the facility to students and others last month. The university says the fitness center is topped with the original cupola from the Marvel Gymnasium, which was demolished in 2002.
  • Lakewood Ranch Branch of the Manatee County YMCA, Bradenton, FL, completed its $2.1 million expansion, which added 13,000 square feet to the Y. It also renovated 7,000 square feet of the facility. The 40,000-square-foot facility includes a new teen center, child-care space, an expanded fitness center, a dance and yoga studio, an assessment room for one-on-one fitness instruction, a group exercise studio and a conference room. The grand reopening celebration will be held on June 15.

  • The American Council on Exercise (ACE), San Diego, reports that researchers of an independent study evaluating the effectiveness of eight triceps exercises found that triangle push-ups, triceps kickbacks and dips registered the highest levels of muscle activation. The study was conducted in response to fitness professionals who reported receiving requests from female clients on ways they can tone their arms, specifically the triceps. A team of exercise scientists from the exercise and health program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse conducted the study. A test group of 15 healthy females, ranging in age from 20 to 24, were enlisted, all of whom had prior weight-training experience.
