Eye on Safety
Advisory
Committee on Electrical Safety Research Identifies Priorities
On August 28, leaders from the National Electrical Code
(NEC)-making panels met to identify and prioritize needed research in
support of the NEC. More than 30 items were identified, with five
priorities: developing profiles of typical and future residential power
consumption, developing data to improve the performance requirements for
surge protection by defining the causes and magnitude of the hazard,
developing an approach to facilitate retrofit of AFCIs in older homes,
developing a means to evaluate the remaining usable life of electrical
components, and studying the impact of third-party certification versus
self-certification on electrical safety. The Fire Protection Research
Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association,
Quincy, Mass., will develop these projects. For more information on the
Advisory Committee on Electrical Safety Research or the Foundation,
