    December Construction Spending Down
    Construction spending in December totaled $1.054 trillion, 3.6% below the December 2007 level and 1.4% down from November, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. For the year, construction spending totaled $1.079 trillion, a 5.1% drop from the previous year.

    States Must Meet or Exceed ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004 by End of 2010
    As required by the Energy Conservation and Production Act, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, "Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings," as the commercial building reference for state building energy codes.

    LonMark International and GreenLink Alliance Form Partnership
    San Jose, Calif.-based LonMark International, a non-profit member trade association recognized as the industry authority for certification, education, and promotion of interoperability standards for the benefit of manufacturers, integrators, and end-users, recently announced its newly established, collaborative agreement with GreenLink Alliance, the Mount Crawford, Vt.-based nonprofit trade association focused on promoting products and services that help to conserve energy in the built environment.

    Clear Skies Solar Begins Preliminary Engineering on $11 Million California Solar Farm
    Clear Skies Solar, Mineola, N.Y., provider of turnkey solar electricity installations, has initiated project engineering on an $11 million, 3.2MW solar farm in Cantil, Calif., to be built on 34 acres of company-owned land.

    Electrical Work in Massachusetts
    Barnstable County. Mass., is seeking sealed bids on behalf of the towns of Barnstable, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Sandwich, Wellfleet, and Yarmouth for on-call tradespersons for maintenance and repair in the electrical trade for the period of April 1, 2009, through March 31, 2010, with the option to renew for one additional year.     Norwalk, Conn.-based EMCOR Group recently announced that its EMCOR Energy Services business has been awarded a contract for the design/build of a cogeneration plant in Susanville, Calif. EMCOR Energy Services will be responsible for all engineering activities, equipment procurement, field construction, and start-up for the 6MW plant.

    Eye on Safety
    Ten-Year Veteran Electrical Worker Dies in Accident
    On Feb. 10, Ernie Russell, 61, was electrocuted when a light post he was setting up touched some overhead power lines in midtown Tucson, Ariz. Russell, a senior electrical supervisor for Ashton Construction, Tucson, Ariz., was working on a transportation enhancement project when the accident occurred.

    The incident is under investigation by both Ashton Construction and the Tucson office of the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
