Hands-on training tool available from CCEFP researchers

As more emphasis is placed on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum in schools, more hands-on experiences for students are required as well. This is why researchers from Purdue and the Center for Compact & Efficient Fluid Power have built a micro-excavator kit that gives students real experience working with a compact device that runs on either hydraulic or pneumatic power. The micro-excavator kit is available to anyone in education or business settings that would like to build their own machine and use it for training purposes. See it in action in the embedded video.

Fluid Power Tips: Issue 11: It's really just a bunch of lines and shapes

Out of any topic under the patio-sized umbrella of fluid power, hydraulic symbology garners the most requests from those wishing to learn more about fluid power. Reading any schematic with more than three symbols can be daunting if your experience is limited. But it’s not impossible to learn. In fact, it only takes a basic level understanding of how symbols work and how they’re arranged in a diagram. One challenge—even if you’ve memorized every symbol in the library—is understanding why a particular symbol is used in a circuit; that part is hard to teach and just comes with experience.

From the archives: Vacuum basics

One of the most key "components" of any pneumatic system is compressed air, which puts the atmosphere to work. Conversely, vacuum uses the surrounding atmosphere to create the work force. This article from our Fluid Power Basics section describes vacuum, its many uses, and highlights how to take advantage of this fluid power resource.

Miniature solenoid valve

A high-density interface (HDI) solenoid valve from The Lee Co. offers increased flow capacity without sacrificing size and weight. The Lo-Lohm HDI uses a spike and hold voltage drive to extend flow and pressure ranges (19 to 39 slim at 50 psid). Available in plug-in and face-mount configurations, the valve measures 1.25 in. long and weighs only 4.5 gram.

Needle and manifold valves

Range of needle and manifold valves from Noshok provides precise flow management. Models include valves suitable for high pressure, high temperature and heavy-duty industrial applications. Carbon steel valves come standard with zinc-nickel plating, to provide high corrosion resistance. Other benefits of zinc-nickel plating include increased deposit hardness, extended wear resistance and longer service life. They are rated for pressures to 10,000 psi without compromising the flow coefficient (Cv). Hard seat, soft seat, and soft tip configurations are available as well as standard and large bore orifice sizes.
