will be in the best position to take advantage of mergers and
acquisitions opportunities in the next few years. Other companies that
are in a good position to benefit include Covidien, Stryker, Zimmer, and
St. Jude Medical, all of which “have a fair amount of cash on their
balance sheet and could benefit from purchasing faster-growing
technologies.”

Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLC (PwC) has released a report citing the top
health industry
issues of 2011 that have been prompted by health reform. The report says
that "2011 is a makeover year for health industry organizations reacting
to and preparing for new rules and payment models. Continuing cost
pressures and new customer demands require a fresh look at existing
roles of industry players."

Fixing a glitch in its clearance process, FDA last week moved to to
resume clearing imaging products that include contrast agent
functionalities or indications in its labeling that require contrast
agents. The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) welcomed the
decision.

Zimmer Holdings Inc (Warsaw, IN) announced two acquisitions at the end
of December. The first was Switzerland-based Sodem Diffusion S.A., which
manufactures SoPlus Orthopaedic Surgical Power Tools. The company will
be renamed Zimmer Surgical S.A. and will be part of Zimmer Surgical,
headquartered in Dover, OH. The acquisition of Beijing Montagne Medical
Device Company, Ltd was also announced.

A rugged version of a coded switch is designed for use in portable
medical, industrial automation, and vision and imaging applications.
Fremont, CA-based Elma Electronics’ M07A is a gray, coded switch that
comes in 16 positions down to 2. BCD or hex versions are available upon
request. Based on the company’s Type 07 switch line, the M07A is said
to be a robust stainless-steel 6-mm tapped shaft (optional 3-mm versions
are available). The switch meets Mil-Std-810F for salt fog and humidity
and Mil-Std-202G for shock and vibration.

A company has released a UV laser marking system for plastic and metals.
UV lasers can produce small characters on a wide array of materials and
are ideal for marking plastics used in the medical and packaging
industries. Miyachi Unitek Corp, Monrovia, CA, says the UV laser markers
also offer extremely controlled metals marking, which results in the
most reliable corrosion-resistant marking for medical materials.
