Hotel occupancy in Mexico was up 10 percent through August
2010, according to STR Global, while the number of international tourist
arrivals to Mexico was up 27.5 percent in July 2010 as compared to July
2009. That’s the good news. The bad news is that continued violence
related to the drug trade in parts of Mexico is affecting the whole of
the country when it comes to meeting and incentive programs. Meeting and
incentive suppliers south of the border are working hard to send the
message that the violence—and the travel warnings—are in regions
that are as far from incentive resorts as Atlanta from Boston. Check the
map—and
the details.

When the International Society of Orthopaedic Centers was
formed by a group of high-level specialists from the largest academic
and research-funded orthopedic centers in the world four years ago, it
was a meeting that quickly became its centerpiece. Moving around the
globe (from the U.S. to Switzerland to Italy to Chile so far), the
gathering’s primary purpose is the sharing of best practices in
orthopedics. Along the way, the international participants consider the
economics, politics, and culture of the countries in which they meet,
and how those local factors affect the delivery of services. Read more
about how
an international meeting is changing worldwide healthcare.

“We see an acceptance … that there are no quick fixes and
that the upturn will be a long, hard road.” That was the assessment of
Damien Little, director at global consultancy Horwath Hotel, Tourism and
Leisure, when the company released its latest Global Hotel Market
Sentiment Survey. The report revealed that hotel operators see positive
movement but a lot of ground yet to regain. We’ve got numbers from STR
Global, too, including who’s
tops in occupancy right now.
