Global Hotel Rankings: We Sort the Stars

By Agnès Canonica

Consider Spain for example. With the country's 17 regions each having its own criteria for hotel rankings, a property in one region might get a four-star label due to all its guest rooms having flat-screen TVs and floor tiles that match the room décor, while a four-star property in another region might have earned its rank due to service level, the quality of its restaurant menus, and infrastructure. So how can planners know what they're getting? And what the heck is a seven-star property? (Answer: marketing.) We've sorted the rankings for you.
