Alliance Name, Bylaws Change Coming Up for a Vote

By Sue Pelletier

Nine months after the Alliance for CME announced at its annual meeting some big changes it was undertaking—including expanding its focus beyond certified continuing medical education—the organization is still busy setting the groundwork to make the new vision a reality.

Medical Meetings recently caught up with Alliance President George Mejicano, MD, to get an overview of the Alliance’s progress to date, from the proposed new name of the organization and a potential move of the headquarters, to the new projects and partnerships the Alliance is developing.

HCEA Reveals 50 Largest Medical Meetings

By Sue Pelletier

According to the Healthcare Convention & Exhibitors Association, dentists are gathering in record numbers these days: The largest U.S. medical meeting held in 2010 was the Greater New York Dental Meeting, which drew 58,135 attendees. Three other dental meetings—those of Chicago, Massachusetts, and California dental societies—also made the top 10 largest U.S. medical meetings on HCEA’s top 50 list.

But it's not just dental societies that are drawing the big crowds.

Alliance Developing Disclosures Database

By Sue Pelletier

The Alliance for Continuing Medical Education is nearing the end of the initial phase of developing a national disclosure system that would standardize conflict-of-interest disclosure data elements, provide a uniform online collection tool, and develop a searchable national data repository. According to Alliance Executive Director Paul D. Weber, MA, it is scheduled to be up and operating by the second quarter of 2012. Faculty disclosure of potential conflicts of interest is required by many continuing education accrediting organizations, including the Accreditation Council for CME.

Here's the skinny on this project, including when it's scheduled to go live.

Great things happen when you meet at Hyatt Regency Atlanta. We've invested more than $65 million in property enhancements in 2011, but it's our people – and the level of service they provide – that make the meetings we host year after year a success. Hyatt. You're more than welcome. Click here.

From Presenter to Teacher: What Makes for Educational Excellence?

By Elissa Shea

"In my opinion, ignoring teaching excellence is like creating a race car and handing the wheel to a baboon." So said one participant in an August 17 chat at the #CMEchat hashtag on Twitter, where a group of CME professionals gathered to discuss the difference between educators and content experts, and what it takes to make a faculty member a real educator.

Here's more on the discussion, which ranged from the characteristics good educators share to the problem with using key opinion leaders.

Only 13 miles from Chicago O'Hare International Airport and 26 miles from the downtown Chicago, The Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel is at the center of it all. Featuring 148,000 square feet of meeting space and 500 luxurious guest rooms, you will find urban style in a convenient, contemporary suburban venue. Click Here.

What Do Docs Want?

By now, most pharmaceutical meeting managers have a pretty good idea of how the Sunshine Act and other federal, state, industry, and corporate compliance issues are shaping what they can and can't do at their meetings with healthcare providers. But do you know what the docs think about it?

You will if you come to the 4th Annual West Coast Life Sciences Meeting Management Forum, to be held December 14-15 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in California. One can't-miss session will be a panel of HCPs who are raring to speak their minds about how compliance issues are affecting their educational needs, along with other hot topics including how and when they select a certified or promotional meeting to attend, and how online education and social media have affected how they obtain clinical information.

Register now at for the 4th Annual West Coast Life Sciences Meeting Management Forum, which is co-sponsored by Medical Meetings and The Center for Business Intelligence.

Listen and learn from three meeting managers who have been named to Corporate Meetings & Incentives' 2011 "Changemakers" list. They'll share how they elevated their roles beyond logistics to focus on the bigger picture: strategic meetings management, meeting design, and ROI. Click here.

The KOL Is Dead. Long Live the KOL!

By Sue Pelletier

A recent discussion on the #CMEchat hashtag on Twitter (transcript is here, or see above article for more) got me thinking about the difference between content experts who just present information and teachers who truly educate. (It set columnist Lawrence Sherman off as well; here are his musings). While key opinion leaders, or KOLs, may have ruled the continuing medical education world for time immemorial, regardless of their educational expertise, I believe that may be a dictatorship that’s going down. It has to, because today’s ever-changing store of knowledge, healthcare environment, and patients all demand that learners actually learn, not just occupy a seat for a prescribed length of time.

Or am I just dreaming of a world in which learning really is the point? And how can we transform talking heads into true adult educators?
