Focusrite
Liquid4Pre
This 4-channel mic preamp from Focusrite ($3,499.99) marries an analog
front-end with dynamic convolution DSP, outputting the sounds of 40
vintage and classic preamps across all four channels. Digitally
controlled and remotely controllable over Ethernet via dedicated
Liquid4Control software, the unit offers 99 setup memory slots and total
recall of every parameter. A Pro Tools TDM/RTAS plug-in allows
integrated remote control via Pro Tools and Icon/Venue systems. A
harmonic distortion circuit accounts for variance in the vintage
originals, while Session Saver -- an AGC circuit -- intelligently
reduces the input level to help avoid critical overs. Every channel has
independent controls for highpass filter, phantom power and polarity
reverse. AES and ADAT optical digital inputs/outputs are provided as is
an optional EtherSound 8-channel card. For more information on new

Mix's New Nashville Columnist, Peter Cooper
The editors of Mix are happy to announce that Peter Cooper has
signed on as the new writer of our "Nashville Skyline" column. Cooper
will be reporting on all the studio business/session news from Music
City, and he couldn't be more qualified for the job! Cooper is a
talented music writer for the Nashville Tennesean, as well as a
country music-history teacher, and a performing musician who can often
be seen out playing bass for singer/songwriter Todd Snider.
Cooper's first column for Mix appears in our March issue, in
which he reveals a few more details about his own career and then digs
into one of the biggest projects to come out of Nashville in recent
months: Vince Gill's Grammy-nominated, multidisc/multigenre album
These Days. Check out "Skyline" in our March "Coast to Coast"
section, and find out how Gill and producer/engineers Justin Niebank and
Gill Hobbs managed to recording and mixing the album's 43 tracks!

Live
Recording: Mixing a Room Mic with Stage Mics
When recording live to a digital audio workstation and
mixing a room mic from front of house together with the stage mics,
there will be a natural delay between the feeds, which makes for a
confusing listening experience. To fix this, go to the tracks in your
DAW's time line and slide the FOH feed forward in time, lining it up
with the loudest thing from the stage. This negates the delay created by
the mic's placement, cleaning up the slappy delay and giving the
listener and mixer a more realistic idea of what's going on in the room.

Tchad
Blake
Expect the unexpected. Nominated for what could be his second Grammy in
the Best Engineered Album Non-Classical category, Tchad Blake is an
extraordinary producer/engineer whose approach to sonics is always out
of conventional bounds. This latest Grammy nod is for his work on
Suzanne Vega's Beauty and Crime, an album that matches unusual
beats with the singer/songwriter's intimate voice, giving her music an
almost otherworldly quality. During his longtime association with
producer/musician (and Vega's ex) Mitchell Froom, whom Blake met at
Sunset Sound in the early 1980s, Blake helped established artists such
as Sheryl Crow and Paul McCartney break new ground. Known for his
unorthodox recording and sound creation methods, Blake's talents have
fit perfectly with the aesthetic of avant-garde artists such as Los
Lobos, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.
Several years ago, Blake moved to the UK, and now does most of his
projects in the Big Room at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios.
Mix has covered many of the milestones in Blake's uncompromising
career. To learn more, see the past features "Working in the Real World," a 2002 interview with
Crowded House's Neil Finn and Maureen Droney's "Radical Recording" story, as well as a new article about Blake's contributions to Vega's
Grammy-nominated release.
