Organizing
a Studio Book
Every control room needs a Studio Book. Mine is a 3-ring
binder of clear, 8.5x11-inch plastic page inserts stuffed with essential
information, listing patchbay routings, printouts of
synth/sampler/effects processor presets, listings of CD effects
library/production music library tracks, drum machine MIDI note
assignments, a chart of piano-scale-to-MIDI-note numbers, phone numbers
for important contacts (local suppliers, regular session players, repair
techs, FedEx, UPS, piano tuners, rental, cartage, etc.) and a back
section with menus of local eateries. Developing your Studio Book is a
small investment that pays off big time!

Artist
Spotlight: Alicia Keys
Nine-time Grammy Award--winner Alicia Keys recently hit the airwaves
with her third studio album, As I Am, out on J Records. The
album's first single, "No One," was written and produced by Keys,
longtime collaborator Kerry "Krucial" Brothers and Dirty Harry. This is
her first studio album since the 2003 release of The Diary of Alicia
Keys. Mix checked out the artist's Oven Studios, a facility
created for Keys and Brothers, founders of KrucialKeys Enterprises. The
facility successfully builds on a pre-existing high-level recording
studio in the New York area. Check out that story here.
