Last Call for Class of 2011 Submissions

Mix is gathering materials for Class of 2011, our annual photo spread showcasing the best of the best of this year’s expertly designed North American recording facilities.

Qualified facilities are ones that were either newly opened or substantially redesigned after March 2010. Please bear in mind that projects involving only new equipment installation or rewiring do not qualify for this particular feature and that in the selection process the quality of the image is of prime importance.

Please e-mail Sarah Benzuly a photo of the empty room (no people). We’re looking for high-quality photos that include the console and monitors and also non-control room shots of good-looking studios. 4x5 transparencies, digital images or slides are the best formats, but prints are acceptable, too, and the name of the photographer should be attached.

Please note that all materials must be received at the Mix offices by this coming Friday, April 22, 2011.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call at 650-238-0344. Thanks for your assistance, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Mix Sound: Lawrence Manchester Growing up in Maine, Lawrence Manchester dreamed of a career in music. Working behind the desk wasn’t part of the original plan, however. Playing guitar and drums, singing, and working steadily in his teens, Manchester headed off to the Peabody Conservatory to hone his classical percussion stops. While in college he became intrigued with the recording process. Manchester is kept busy these days with his steady job as Music Mixer for the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show, and he sandwiches film score dates around his work at NBC.

PopMark Media/Studio Unknown's Confessions of a Small Working Studio Balancing Act: Craft Vs. Business In life, there’s a lot to be said for generosity, right? It really does go a long way, and if you believe the adage “What goes around, comes around,” it’s especially poignant. However, in business, there’s a point at which going overboard with generosity means shooting yourself in the foot; it’s a delicate balance. For some reason, sound designers have earned a reputation for being some of the most “generous” folks around—at least in the eyes of filmmakers. But it only has to get obnoxiously out of hand if you let it. The sound designers featured in this month’s column have mastered the fine art of making amazing things happen within the confines of a budget. While they’ll admit they still went a little above and beyond, these composers were able to prevent themselves from total exploitation by effective communication and considerable imagination.

Softube ME 1B Midrange Equalizer, Classic Channel Plug-Ins

Softube introduces the ME 1B Midrange Equalizer plug-in ($199), which is modeled on Tube-Tech’s passive, tube-based midrange equalizer—itself based on the Pultec MEQ-5 midrange equalizer—and the Classic Channel plug-in bundle ($599.99; pictured). Softube endeavored to model the hardware units’ components and classic Tube-Tech sound, together with the designers at Lydkraft/Tube-Tech, and all plug-ins are native for Mac/PC and available in VST/VST3/AU/RTAS formats.

The Classic Channel bundle comprises the Tube-Tech CL 1B opto compressor, Tube-Tech PE 1C "Pultec" equalizer and Tube-Tech ME 1B midrange equalizer plug-ins. Individual bypass is available for each plug-in, and it is possible to change the order of the equalizers and compressor. The plug-ins also include a modeled output transformer and promise “analog behavior” with respect to frequencies, phase, distortion, attack, release, and more.

CD Review: The Smithereens '2011' (eOne Music)

Bands that stand the test of time have their own sound, and there’s no mistaking The Smithereens. These guys—best known for songs such as “Green Thoughts” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep”—haven’t put out an album in 12 years, but 15 seconds into their superb new release, there’s no doubt The Smithereens are back. The group has updated their low-end-heavy guitar sounds on this record.  Read more of this CD review.
