Front-of-house engineer John Lee Hardee was recently spotted at the Langerado Festival mixing for longtime artist Ani DiFranco. Here's what he says about mixing up his style for festival performances:

Well, I turn it up for starters. Our usual setting would be a theater, symphony hall or auditorium, so when we get outside (circumstances allowing) I give it some gas. I’ll goose the kick drum a little extra, make sure the bass is pleasantly covering the area and have some fun. On the windy days, there are some extra considerations as to mic placement and such. Due to the complexity of the monitor setup, we never do a show without a proper soundcheck. On festival days, that can mean a 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. load-in, and by the time we take the stage later that evening there will have been temperature, weather and crowd population changes that will have to be addressed by the beginning of the show. And when she finally takes the stage and all those screaming voices get really, really loud and that first songs starts—I love that feeling!
