Tips and Techniques from Inside Mix
Sound designer Gary Rydstrom on sound effects editing on the Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise latest film, Minority Report: "One of my favorites is when the images freeze, as if the sound is caught in this loop and pulsing. I would jog to a crawl and the jog system would have this speed-up slow-down, speed-up slow-down, speed-up slow-down pattern to it. You get these eerie little sounds that you can place on these images." MORE

FOH engineer Terry Pearson on mixing for Alanis Morisette's live act: "Alanis writes all of her lyrics, and I think people come to the show to hear those lyrics, so I try to mix so that [the lyrics] are on top and out front and intelligible. However, she doesn't sing very loudly, and because of that, her vocal mic [Audix VX10] has a lot of gain, and she moves all over the stage, so you pick up stage volume through the vocal mic, which is the biggest challenge in mixing the show."
