MORE New Instrument, FX and Utility Plug-Ins Product Hits From Summer NAMM Tips from Inside Mix Oscar-winning re-recording mixer Mike Minkler on working in the era of "loud mixes": "I think it was up to the mixers to change their techniques and maybe use some different tools that they never used in the past, like compressors on the mix buses or multiband compression on certain elements -- something to help smooth this out. I like being big and bold, but I don't want to hurt anybody. It's not how loud you make something that's going to impress people. It's the use of your sounds." MORE Rush's bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee on mixing their newest, Vapor Trails: "We mixed down to 1-inch analog so we could compare in the mastering facility [Masterdisk] what sound we liked better. The 1-inch tape won about 70 percent of the time, but they both sounded great. It just depended on the style you wanted for the particular sound."
