Recording Tip from George Petersen Recording Tip from George Petersen, Mix's Editorial Director Intonation is everything! In my studio, we make sure everything's in tune. The studio grand is tuned regularly. I keep a Peterson (no relation) strobe tuner in the control room and a Loft/GoldLine TS-1 test set/frequency counter next to the patchbay to verify intonation. This really is a must for guitars and basses, but especially for vintage analog synths. Retuning drums for every tune would be way over the top, but I'm constantly changing ride and crash cymbals to match the song's key. It's a subtle, but noticeable improvement. |
