The Wide-Splay Mini P.A.
Tired of the load-ins, rushed soundchecks and hassles of doing rock dates, I started doing acoustic coffeehouse shows some years ago. The gigs needed a hint of sound reinforcement--an extra 3 dB or so--to go above the drone of the espresso machines. I started with a 12-inch/horn cabinet in front of me, but I could never tell what it sounded like or if it was too loud, so I switched to using a single floor wedge. The sounds reflected off of the hard wall or corner behind me, resulting in a wide, diffuse soundfield--just right for coffeehouse ambience--and I had plenty of monitor: A simple, but effective solution!
