The next ProToolsUsers meeting will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at 7.30 p.m. Digidesign's Tom Graham will be chairing a discussion on surround mixing with special guest speaker Greg Penny, who recently remixed Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 96kHz surround. Scott Wood from the Digidesign development team will talk on "Dispelling the Myths: Mixing In the Box." The meeting will be co-hosted by representatives from Sony Oxford, who will talk about their Pro Tools Plug-Ins. There will also be an opportunity to catch up on the other new product updates and announcements from the NAMM show, as well as the ProToolsUsers Prize draw. Digidesign to Receive Oscar for Pro Tools System
Avid Technology announced that its audio division, Digidesign, will receive an Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statuette) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The statuette, which will be presented at the Scientific and Technical Academy Awards on February 14, 2004, will recognize Digidesign for the design, development and implementation of the Pro Tools digital audio workstation. Session Update From Avatar
Recent projects at Avatar (New York City) included guitarist George Benson putting the finishing touches on his new record in Studio A. Alec Head engineered with assistance from Ross Petersen. Also in "A" was bassist Charlie Haden to record his new Verve release with guest Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Jay Newland engineered with help from Petersen. MORE

Solange Knowles at SugarHill
Solange has returned to SugarHill Recording Studios (Houston) to begin tracking a new album with engineer John Griffin. The CD will be her followup to last year's debut, Solo Star. MORE

Neumann Mics Capture 'Cold Mountain' Soundtrack
Michael Piersante, recording engineer for producer T-Bone Burnett, used a mix of vintage Neumann and RCA microphones to re-create the sounds for Cold Mountain. Piersante revealed that the songs for Cold Mountain are more simply arranged to capture "the feeling that the music is being played by real people sitting on their porch playing a song on a banjo or a fiddle."
